In 1913, Methodist Episcopal Church became affiliated with the National Baptist Convention and moved its headquarters to Elmira from Baltimore because of concerns about racially segregated churches in Maryland at that time. By 1924, there were over 100 churches associated with the National Baptist Convention operating out of Elmira alone! Reverend Jolinus Kingsbury became pastor of Friendship Baptist Church when it merged with First Presbyterian Church in 1949 – making him one of only two African American pastors serving Protestant congregations within Prince George's County at that time! It wasn't until 1971 that all black ministers withinPrince George's County were united into one denomination – Bible Christianity Fellowship!
