Cambridge, Maryland is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 20,149 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. The city was founded on July 16, 1776 by Englishman John Smith as Cambridge Plantation and named for Cambridge University in England. The original village developed around the intersection of two roads that were then called Indian Road and Spring Garden Lane. A post office was established in 1787, and the first school was built in 1789. The first store opened in 1815. In 1830, there were only 9 residents living in Cambridge; by 1860, it had grown to over 50 people. The opening of the York River Bridge across the river made Cambridge an important transportation hub for farmers and others travelling between Prince George's County and Baltimore City; this led to increased business activity and development around the town square. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses operating in Cambridge; by 1920, it had reached 400 businesses! During World War II (1939-1945), many jobs were created through industrial production such as aircraft manufacturing which took place adjacent to downtown (now part of light industrial zoning). Unfortunately many factories closed after 1945 due to competition from Korean industry or other war-time technological advances which outcompeted American manufacturers new technology etc.). Some notable products that may have been produced here during wartime include: radios used by Marines during combat operations on Iwo Jima (the famous "Jap Nightingale"), tanks dating back to World War I (George Washington Carver’s Cadillac), Lockheed Martin F-104 Starfighters used by Air Force pilots training at NortonAir Force Base northeast of town during Operation Neptune’s Spear (the invasion of Iraq) In recent years much redevelopment has taken place with growth towards high tech parks such as "Silicon Valley" just outside town limits
The town of Cambridge, Maryland was founded in 1747 by colonists from England. The town grew rapidly and by 1812 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In the 1830s, the town became an important center for cotton production. The town was destroyed by fire in 1868, but was rebuilt and renamed after its founder, John Fenton Cambridge.
