Cambridge, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Prince George's County Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cambridge was first settled in 1724 by Captain John Smith and his team of Virginians as a trading post on the Patuxent River. In 1847, it became the capital of Confederate America during the American Civil War. After the war, Cambridge became an agricultural center with large tracts of land devoted to raising crops such as corn and soybeans. The economy has diversified since then; now it is home to factories and businesses as well as residential areas. The town was founded on April 25, 1724 by Captain John Smith and his team of Virginians when they arrived from England for what would be their final expedition into North America. With only eleven men, Smith set up shop along the Patuxent River where he traded goods with local Native Americans for food and horses necessary for their journey westward. By 1800, there were over 100 families residing in Cambridge proper; however many left during or after the American Revolution because of fear of British retribution should they become Loyalists (a term used to describe those who remained loyal to Britain). Because most people living in Cambridge were farmers or merchants who rented space from landowners or bought goods from them directly rather than selling through commerce (the process known as "commerce", which helped support English society), little development took place until after World War II when people began buying more houses and developing streetscape/landscaping around them instead of farming out land to others. In 1955-1957 construction began on Interstate 95 near present day Monument Road making Cambridge one of its earliest destinations for commuters; this traffic increase led to increased business opportunities for residents which have continued today despite some fluctuations in economic production throughout history due to political changes outside our control like natural disasters or pandemics like SARS). During both World Wars there were numerous munitions plants located just east of downtown that produced artillery shells, ammo cartridges and other military supplies needed by our allies while also creating significant amounts of pollution that affected nearby neighborhoods including New Kent County’s Bowie Park which still features evidence from these days’ munitions production although much less visible today due to recent updates made by authorities regarding air quality etc.).
