The history of coffee in Portland, Maine goes back to 1854. The first coffee house in the city was built by a group of businessmen led by John Lloyd and James G. Shea. They opened the Coffee House on Market Street near the present day Statehouse Annexe. In 1862, Mr. Lloyd founded what is now known as Peet's Coffee and Tea Company which remains one of the most successful small businesses in Portland today. In 1872, Mr. Lloyd sold his interest in Peet's to Amos Noyes who continued to operate it until 1912 when it merged with Jughead Woolley's Brewing Company to formPortland Brewing Company Incorporated (PBC). At PBC, veteran brewer and business manager George Haffey began expanding the company into other markets including Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City; he also developed a reputation for being able to produce high-quality Coffees from challenging sources such as Sumatra Sulawesi Borneo robusta beans sourced directly from Java Island. After years of success, Haffey decided to sell his share in PBC to two friends - David Stansbury and Herb Slatkin - who formed Portland Coffee Corporation (PCC) with headquarters located at 515 Sutter Street in downtown Portland. In 1984, PCC became part of North America Beverage Corporation (NAB), a division of PepsiCo Inc., which has controlled its operations ever since. As part of NAB's divestitures program, PCC was divided among several owners including Two Brothers Coffee & Tea Trust Co., Ltd., an acquisitions company organized by Warren Buffet during their purchase of Anheuser-Busch InBev USA for $3 billion in 2002; however, Millichap Coffee Holdings LLC purchased all assets and liabilitiesof PCC effective February 1st 2006 for an undisclosed sum value. Portland, Maine is a small town in thecentral region of Maine. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. Portland was founded in 1795 by General Philip Vandal and his team of soldiers as a trading post on the Penobscot River. The first courthouse was built here in 1810 and served as the court house for all of Cumberland County until that structure burned down in 1834. The city's name comes from its location on Portland Bay, about upstream from present-day downtown Portland. At first, traders called the area "Portsmouth" because of its close proximity to Portsmouth, England. In 1799, Samuel Adams established a shipyard here and quickly became one of America's leading shipbuilders; his yard produced more than 100 vessels between 1800 and 1806. In 1861, when Portland become part of Maine after it seceded from Massachusetts, its mayor proposed that it be made the state capital; but this proposal was not accepted by the legislature. The first state Capitol building (now known as the State House) was erected here in 1875; however, it did not serve long due to damage sustained during an earthquake two years later. In 1893–94, construction began on what would become Portland’s most famous landmark: Pioneer Square – a square mile (2 km2) east-northeast of downtown which included many important civic buildings including City Hall and State Street Terminal railway station – remains today one of America’s most popular tourist attractions despite having been vacant for almost half a century since its dedication ceremonies in 1934). A new City Hall building was completed in 1915 and serves as both City Hall and Court Annex today.
