Lewiston is a town in central Maine, United States. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. Lewiston is the only municipality in Maine without a ward system. The Mayor of Lewiston is appointed by the Town Council and serve for two terms with no limit on how many terms they may serve. The town was founded by English settlers in 1824 as part of enlarged docket number 3 from present day Auburn and other towns west of Bangor. It became a borough in 1855, then an incorporated town in 1916. In 1980 it became a city after being approved by the Maine Legislature. Lewiston is named for General John A. Lewistone, who served as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War and died at Battle of Bull Run on April 14, 1865.

Lewiston is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 6,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor- Lewiston-Auburn Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town comes from Sir John Ayer's 1695 work "The History and Topography of Ancient and Modern Lewiston". Lewiston was founded by English colonists in 1785 as a small trading post on the Kennebec River. In 1825, it became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500. After several years of growth, Lewiston reached its peak in 1855 when it had a population of 10,000. However, during the 1860s and 1870s economic development slowed due to Great Britain's war efforts. By 1880, Lewiston had shrunk to 2,000 people and remained so until the mid-19th century when it began to experience significant population growth again due to increasing industry and trade within New England and beyond. In 1918,Lewiston incorporated as a city under state law following passage of the State Constitution which granted cities such power over local affairs. That same year saw another boom in business with new factories opening up throughout central Maine including one in Lewiston that produced munitions for World War I. By 1930 there were 15 businesses operating in downtown Lewiston employing 100 residents while 3% of all manufacturing was done here outside city limits
