The history of the Coast Guard in Lewiston, Maine begins with the creation of the town in 1884. The first Coast Guard station was built in downtown Lewiston and served as a barracks for the local militia. In 1912, a new Coast Guard station was constructed on Asbury Street and became operational as the town’s first port of entry. The main purpose of this station was to provide security for the town during times when fishing or shipping operations were conducted in its waters. In 1923, a second Coast Guard station was built on Depot Street and became operational as the town’s second port of entry. This station was used primarily for law enforcement purposes and played an important role in keeping order during periodic events such as summer fairs or carnivals. From 1938 until 1971, both stations were operated by the same organization under different nameplates. Despite its importance, it wasn’t until 1978 thatLewiston received its own municipally-owned Coast Guard Station. ThisStation was initially called Station C but changed its name to Station B after city officials decided that it would be more appropriate to call it “Coastal Security Headquarters” due to its significant role within municipal borders. In 1992, Coastal Security Headquarters relocated from Depot Street to its current location on Park Boulevard which provides ample space for all aspects of government operation including helicopter landing pads and harbor surveillance patrols. The town's growth continued until the early 1800s when mills were built along the river for both local production and export. By 1825, Lewiston had become one of Maine's largest towns with over 10,000 residents living within its boundaries. During World War I, Lewiston played an important role in helping support Allied troops throughout Europe. In particular, it contributed men and materiel to various military campaigns including Operation Overlord which led to Nazi Germany's defeat at Normandy beachhead on June 6, 1944. After the war ended, many businesses closed down due to economic recession; however, business resumed quickly after 1971 whenLewiston joined the Municipal Services District (Municipal Service District #1). The town's history goes back to when two men named Ouellette traveled downriver from Fort William Henry to find a route to the Canadian Pacific Railway. They built a log cabin near present-day Lewiston and began trading with other navigationists on the river. In 1852, they built a better cabin and started trading with settlers on both sides of the river. By 1860, Lewiston had become an important commercial center for both east and west Maine due to its location along one of the main routes linking Canada with New England. Lewiston experienced some significant growth during World War II as many munitions manufacturers came totown for wartime production; however, most of these businesses left after hostilities ended in 1945. However, some new businesses such as Home Depot and Lowe's have kept Lewiston going over the years. Today, Lewiston features several high-tech startups that are creating jobs in technology companies such as Google Earth and Amazon Alexa; as well as small businesses that provide services like home health aides or window cleaning massacres locals into shape for their holiday gift giving season!
