The history of the Lewiston Army Air Base is a long and winding one. The base was founded in 1941 as the Lewiston-Auburn Army airfield, but did not open to the public until 1945. It served as a training ground for the United States Military during World War II, and later saw action in the Korean War. Inactivated in 1994, it reopened as an active duty military installation in 2001. The base currently serves as a hub for military activities throughout central Maine. Lewiston is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-B framesborough metropolitan area. Lewiston is located on the southern shore of the Kennebec River and straddles the border between Penobscot and Brunswick counties. The first permanent settler in present-day Lewiston was John Morse in 1795. The town was platted in 1806 by Captain Samuel Andrews as an agricultural center on land that he had bought from the Winthrop tribe of Indians. The town's name originates from its founder, who named it for his friend and neighbor, Elijah Lewis (1753–1828). Lewiston rapidly grew as a result of its location on Route 10A – which led to heavy industry and commerce during its early years. In 1836, steamboats began running downriver through Lewiston; this created a significant demand for goods and services available within reach of residents. During World War II, Lewiston played an important role as one of two main Port Augusta Army Airfields in New England. After 1945, much development took place near the airport including new housing and businesses replacing older facilities which were taken down to make way for developments such as I-95/I-84 highway construction projects

One such donation came from Ford Motor Company chairperson Henry Ford Jr., who gave $500,000 towards weapon development at USMA between 1947 and 1954 – this was also during the height of Cold War tensions between the United States and Soviet Union. In 1968, then-USMA president Adm John Jumper presented USMC Commandant General James Doolittle with a world-renowned M61 Vulcan sniper rifle – this was Doolittle's first operational role as commanding general of Marine Corps Forces Pacific (MACFAP). 4) In 1992, then-President Bill Clinton made an honorary presentation to members of cadets at USMA depicting Ulysses S Grant's last stand against Lee Tattersall during Gettysburg Address fame – this event marked McGovern's final days as dean of USMA before he became chancellor later that year. Additionally, Clinton donated $25 million towards construction projects at USMA during his time in office - this included renovations to Yost Hall (now known as McCain School Of Public Affairs), Asnell Annexe (now known as Norton Simon Hall), West steps/east porch (now known as Green Pavilion), McNair Quadrangle/South Lawn/East Campus Pond resources area & North Lawn golf course clubhouse renovation project - all worth an estimated $225 million USD collectively!

The community grew rapidly after the opening of the Lewiston-Auburn Railroad in 1847, and by 1861 had reached a population of 3,000 people. In 1893, the town made up part of the newly created Portland-Lewiston metropolitan area. By 2000, Lewiston's population had shrunk to 1,100 people from its peak of 2,500 people. Today, Lewiston is known for its history and culture as well as its vibrant economy which depends largely upon manufacturing and agricultural products. The town's architecture is characterized by vernacular style with locally harvested materials used throughout. Many of Lewiston's streets were built using logs that were brought downriver from nearby woods. As a result of this emphasis on local resources and creativity, many buildings remain standing today that would not have been possible without these sustainable practices. One important aspect ofLewiston's history that has not been lost on locals or visitors alike is its role as an important crossroads for commerce during both locales' early days and during more recent times when Interstate 95 crossed through the town center. This highway played an essential role in developing much of rural Maine during the late 19th century while also contributing to significant economic development in downtown Lewiston over time including construction of several large factories along I-95 such as Carrier Corporation and JBS USA (now Abbott Laboratories). Today various shops and restaurants line Main Street near I-95 while a number of vintage automobiles are available for sale at several spotted markets around town
