The Maine Air National Guard's 388th Bombardment Wing is responsible for the air defense of the state. The wing traces its origins to World War I when it was organized as the 97th Aero Squadron, part of the British Empire's Royal Flying Corps. The squadron served in Europe and soon became known as "The Buffs" because of their red and yellow cockpits and blue overalls. In 1940, during World War II, the RAF transferred control of the 97th Aero Squadron to the United StatesAAF. WithDouglas DC-3 transports providing troop transport and bombers escort missions over Europe, "The Buffs" flew strategic missions against Nazi Germany. The squadron also flew antisubmarine patrols off Maine shores. In 1946, while flying a Douglas A-36A Superfortress from England to bases on Newfoundland, "The Buffs" were mistakenly identified by radar as a Soviet bomber force heading our way; they escortednonexistent Soviet bombers back to their base before returning home safely. Lewiston, Maine is a small town located in central Maine. The population was 1,946 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine School District. The town began as a ferry landing on the Penobscot River in 1784 and grew slowly until it became an incorporated town in 1858. Its name comes from Chief Lewiston's order to the people of nearby Auburn that they start to clear land for farming purposes and build a house there. In 1925, Lewiston became home to the first high school in New England when it opened up as Bates High School. The school closed in 1970 but has been reopened as part of Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Auburn since 2001. Lewiston also played a significant role in early Maine history with its arsenal and militia armories dating back to 1793 and its first store opening in 1810. Today, Lewiston has two museums - one focused on local history, the other on transportation history - as well as several businesses including a bank and two restaurants which serve fresh seafood all year round.
