Biddeford, Maine is a town in Wells County, Maine, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is part of the Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Biddeford was James Manning who came to the area in 1821. Biddeford became a borough in 1868 and was united with Wellesley Township on November 1, 1878. The town's history begins with its founding as a small farming community by James Manning and his family in 1821. By 1830, the community had developed into a small town with a post office and some businesses. In 1838, Henry Aiken donated land for the current downtown area which includes present day Biddeford Square and several other buildings including the old courthouse where the town council met until 1865. Among those who helped develop Biddeford were David Price, editor of The Portland Gazette; Ezra Stiles (the founder of Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Portland); John Morse (the builder of Morse Inn & Masonic Hall); Daniel Webster; and Captain Ebenezer Whitehead (a member of Quaker Meeting House). In 1870, when Maine became an independent state, Biddeford joined Wells County as it expanded eastward into what are now Addison and Auburn Counties. On December 12, 1898 – one week after New England’s annexation by Canada – Biddeford voters approved becoming an unincorporated community within Wellesley Township instead of annexing to it because they believed that would have meant giving up their civic rights as well as their church property which remain within Wellesley today (). The decision to stay within Wellesley Township has been upheld by subsequent zoning changes passed by township officials since then (). On May 4th 1904 local resident Simeon Beery set off fireworks from his house on Main Street near Center Street during Mardi Gras celebrations following America’s entry into World War I . When word spread about what had happened someone called the police department who arrested Beery without incident. This event is considered by many locals to be one of the most famous law enforcement incidents in town’s history
