In 1795, two British officers, Captain John Smith and Lieutenant James Cook became the first Europeans to taste American coffee from a shipwreck off Cape Cod. They reported that it was strong but tepid and not as sweet as European java (the type they drank at home). This new variety of Java wasn't popular with colonists until after they tasted British-grown Dutch coffee aboard their ships when they visited America in 1797-98! The first Starbucks opened up shop in Seattle on May 8th 1976! Starbuck's first location outside of North America was located at 4362 King St NW (now called Pike Place Market).
