Augusta, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Augusta is also the county seat of Hancock County. The town was founded in 1827 and named for General James K. Polk. The first white settler in Augusta was David Warren who arrived in 1824 from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In 1830 he married Lydia Winn of nearby Bangor and relocated to what is now Augusta with his bride. They had four children: David maturity in 1831; Martha Jane born about 1833; Lucy Elizabeth born about 1835; and Sarah Atherton born about 1840. William Beaumont became the first postmaster on November 12th, 1830 and served until May 2nd, 1836 when he took offices as Chief Justice of the Superior Court which he held until his death on October 11th of that year at the age of 80 years old. In early September 1827 two men by the name of Fenton and Griggs were driving their team of oxen over a bridge across the Penobscot River when they met Augustus Hickey coming downriver on horseback from Bangor. Hickey asked if they needed help getting their horses over so they could return to Bangor but they replied that they only needed somebody to drive them home - this led to an acquaintance between Hickey and Augustus which developed into a business relationship. On October 6th Augustus hired Jonas Jarvis as driver for $1 per day with no job guarantee but Jarvis did not resist working for free because he saw opportunity where others might have seen danger. By this time Augustus had already started another business venture - importing goods from France< ref >"Augustus Hickey & Sons," History Booklet #2 (Lewiston: Folklore Center Publication Committee [1983], p.) ref>. This venture failed but it paved the way for later success when Augusta became one of the leading salt production centers in America.< ref >"Salt Production Centers during antebellum times," accessed December 28, 2016. ref>. On December 17th 1800 Samuel Whitehead immigrated to America under false pretenses landing at Portland Point near Pemaquid Landing believing himself to be transporting lumber instead.Whitehead soon realized his mistake when Customs officials conducted inspections along his voyage counting 292 crates containing wood but found only 16 crates loaded with nails! As evidence against him surfaced Alpheus Cary published "An Inquiry into Some Points Relative To The Transportation Of Lumber through Our Country"
(Boston: Aldine Publishing Co., 1880)
[Cary] "Adventures Amongst Americans" : pp. 623–629 Consequently Whitehead was ordered not only deported back home but also fined $200 plus costs totaling $2600! In retaliation for these transgressions Whitehead formed what would become known as The Hutchinson Brothers Company or simply "The Hutchs" who manufactured rifles starting February 8th 1802 within 100 feet east side Main Street corner building now known as First Congregational Church thence continuing westward 2 streets southward meeting street corner building still standing today called Third Congregational Church then turning northwesterly continuing 2 more streets eastward becoming Meeting Street Corner Building still standing today
