From the late 1800s to the present, Augusta, Maine has been a hub of air force activity. The Augusta Air National Guard Base was founded in 1916 and is one of the largest military installations in New England. The base has more than 1,000 acres and hosts more than 60 fighter and bomber aircraft. A Brief History of Augusta, Maine Augusta was founded in 1784 as a small town located on the banks of the Penobscot River. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s and by 1836 it had reached its current size. Augusta experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its strategic location on the Route 1 corridor and its wide variety of businesses and industries. The town also benefited from heavy investment in infrastructure projects such as a new water supply system, streetlights, and a modernization of the city's transportation system. During the 1960s and 1970s, Augusta experienced significant gentrification spurred by booming business opportunities in nearby New York City. This change led to increased competition for jobs, home values, andresidential space in what was once an agricultural community. Today, Augusta remains one of Maine's most populous towns with over 60,000 residents. Its economy is primarily based on education, tourism, manufacturing (particularly plastics), service sector businesses such as restaurants and retail stores, and professional services such as law enforcement and accounting.
Airforce gift history began with the beginning of the United States Air Force in 1947. The USAF was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947, which authorized the President to create a military service that would be separate from the Army and Navy. The USAF was initially envisioned as an air-powered arm of the ground forces, but it quickly became evident that this was not going to work. The USAF needed heavier bombers and fighters to carry out its missions, and these were not available from either the Army or Navy. So, in 1948, Congress passed an act that gave the USAF its own budget and made it possible for it to purchase planes and missiles from other countries. This allowed the USAF to become one of America's primary military allies. The task of providing air support for American troops has always been important to the USAF, and this has never been more true than during World War II. In 1942,America had only around 2,000 operational aircraft – half of which were fighter planes – while Nazi Germany had over 400 times as many planes (and thousands more soldiers) deployed across Europe. To provide cover for American troops on operations such as D-Day or Operation Market Garden, American pilots flew over 350 different types of airplanes including fighter jets, bombers, transport aircraft and helicopters. Some historians have even argued that without airpower at America's disposal there would have been no Allied victory in WWII! Today, we continue to rely on air power for a variety of purposes both inside and outside our borders. For example: In Afghanistan,[i] US Special Operations Forces are using night airstrikes against Taliban targets;[ii] France is deploying multiple dozens Joint Strike Fighters (JSF) carrierships off their coast in order to conduct strikes against Islamic State militants;[iii] UK Prime Minister Theresa May is using RAF Tornadoes[iv]to target Daesh positions in Syria;[v] Canada is working with US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornetsto take down ISIL targets near Mosul;[] India is conducting airstrikes against Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif regime using Jaguars.[vi] And most recently NATO member Croatia conducted airstrikes against two Serbian villages after they refused permission for Croatian warplanes access.[vii][viii][ix]

Augusta, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Augusta was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a city in 1907. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. The town is named after Augustus Montresor, 3rd Duke of Bedfordshire (1696-1774), an English statesman who served as Prime Minister twice during the reign of George II (1714-1820). The first settler in Augusta was John Prentice, who arrived from Canada in 1827. In 1830, two more settlers arrived: Levi Coffin and Salmon Pucket. In 1840, another group of immigrants came: Isaac Smith and Abram Morse. By 1850 there were twenty-four residents living in Augusta. In 1857 Augustus Montresor donated land to make into a city park which would eventually become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Maine. On May 5th, 1907 Augusta was officially made an incorporated city with a population of over 1,500 people by Governor Joseph Curtis Gurney Jr.. A few years later on December 12th 1909 the first automobile intersection was built when Winton Road became road number 2 within Augusta's limits
After the American Revolution, Augusta became a part of the United States of America. In 1795, the town was founded by Colonel John Smith as a military post on the site of present-day Augusta. The Post Office was established in 1800 and remained in operation until it closed in 1857. In 1814, General David Thompson's army invaded Maine and occupied Augusta. After being driven out by General Nathaniel Banks' forces, the British garrison retreated to their original positions at Fort George and Fort Portland. Augusta experienced some growth after its incorporation as a town. Community members built homes along Wabanaki River and developed businesses such as flour mills and tanneries. By 1830, most of the town's citizens were white indentured servants from England who had been brought over for cheap labor purposes. However, many African Americans had also arrived in Augusta during this time period and began working within the local community.
