Thibodaux is a small town in the parish of Thibodaux, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,728 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Mississippi River and is named after General Lafayette. The Naval Air Station at Thibodaux was a major center for training naval aviators during World War II. Thibodaux was founded by Huguenots in 1699 as "Tiburon". The town's first settler, Pierre Le Moyne, built a cabin here in 1766. In 1812, Captain James Kenedy landed his ship at Thibodaux to sell goods to Native Americans who had gathered there for trade purposes. He named the place after General Lafayette because he admired this French general's military skills and patriotic dedication to France during the American Revolution. At that time, Thibodaux consisted of about twenty homes and two churches. In 1862, local resident John Troup donated land north of present-day downtown for development into what would become known as "the Broadway district." In 1875, an oil well was drilled in nearby Luling and production began immediately; it continued until 1935 when oil became too expensive to sustainably produce. That same year saw the founding of Thibodaux's first business: The Standard Oil Company bookstore/ Variety Hall which still stands today (opened 1924). From then until 1978 when it merged with another local business chain called Records Mart Inc., Thibodaux flourished as a manufacturing center for aluminum cans and other products such as plastics and car parts. However, due to global recession that struck America hard in 2008-2009 (see economic downturn), many businesses closed their doors or found themselves sinking deeper into debt syndicateankruptcy filings over several years leading up to 2011 bankruptcy filing by Record Mart parent company PNC Financial Services Group Incorporated - effectively ending any hope that Tiburon may revive since its heyday some thirty years ago despite much talk from boosters about reviving old businesses being reborn new again mixed with redevelopment plans on various blocks around town including riverfront properties overlooking downtown making use of river front waterfront property directly across from state government property now home to IHOP restaurant) . Thibodaux, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by French colonists who named it after the town of Thibault (now Villefranche-sur-Mer), Normandy. The first post office in Thibodaux was established in 1838. In 1840, the town had two stores and four families. By 1845, the population had grown to thirty seven residents and six businesses. In 1850, Thibodaux boasted a school and one store; by 1860 there were three stores and fifty five residents. In 1863, Confederate General Joseph Ewell advanced his forces through Jefferson Parish towards Mobile Bay; during this time Tibodaux became an important supply center for Confederate troops moving into southern Alabama and Mississippi. After Ewell's defeat at Chickamauga on September 17 that year, most of the supplies necessary for continued fighting were blockaded at Thibodaux until October 10 when Union forces arrived to seize control of the ports supplying Confederate forces in Georgia and Tennessee. Aftermath of war saw many refugees flee to Thibodaux as Prussian soldiers occupying northern France began operations against Napoleon III's regime in 1870–71renaming much of what is now northeastern France "Alsace" under German occupation following its victory over Austria-Hungary at Unter den Linden on November 12 that year - including Alsace-Lorraine which lay within modern day eastern Jefferson Parish as well as much of southeastern Lafourche Parish - particularly areas east of Interstate 10 near Baton Rouge Boulevard.
