Thibodaux, Louisiana is a town in the parish of Thibodaux, in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, in east-central Louisiana. The population was 6,714 at the 2010 census. It is an agricultural and rural community with a small manufacturing sector. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Thibodaux were French colonists who founded the colony of St. Bernard de L'Assomption on October 26, 1718. They named their new settlement after Thomas Thibodeau (died 1685), one of their number and one of the main participants in the construction of Fort Basse (1685–87). The original mission church was built on December 7, 1721 by Father Pierre-Jacques Vacheron as Saint-André-du-Lac du Lac Mission Church. In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte installed his brother Joseph as Governor of Louisiana under French rule. At this time, Lafitte had become leader of an important sugarcane plantation near New Orleans called La Pointe aux Boeufs (Point les Bois). On November 20, 1803—two days after Joseph's installation—he met with Bonaparte at a place known as "the Pigeon Forge" to try to negotiate a peace treaty between their respective countries that would end the Napoleonic Wars. But whenJoseph found out that Bonaparte intended to annex alligators from his plantation into artillery batteries for military service instead of selling them back to him like he had agreed upon earlier,—he quickly fled northward without another word or sign from either man. In 1804 General John Taylor occupied Baton Rouge and ordered all Orleans Parish residents must leave within 72 hours or face eviction; any remaining inhabitants were then put into exile on plantations throughout southeastern Louisiana until such time as they could be deported back home following Napoleon's victory over Taylor at Yorktown Heights on September 9th 1805. When news arrived that Napoleon had been defeated at Waterloo on April 6th 1815 and was retreating northeastward through these parts he ordered all remaining residents recalled back home and some were forced onto plantations where they remain today including Thibodaux itself which went uncollected for more than two centuries! In 1830 there were only about 100 people living in Thibodaux proper; by 1840 it had grown to 1,500 people! Over time many families moved away from agriculture due to various factors such as railroad development nearby or other changes occurring within France; however farming remained an important aspect of life until around 1960 when mechanized production became more prevalent throughout much of America resulting in less need for manual labor and consequent decline in prices paid for goods sold hereabouts
