Thibodaux, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 33,711 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Jefferson Parish. The town of Thibodaux was platted in 1837 by Pierre Lafitte and his son André Lafitte. The town was named for General Lafayette who fought during the American Revolution. The present site of Thibodaux was first settled by French colonists in the 17th century. In 1836, Lafitte's brother Lamar started construction on a sawmill and grist mill on the river near what is now Thibodaux High School. This mill became known as Lamar & Company Mill because it processed lumber from surrounding plantations. In 1840, Lumber Trustee John Sayers bought the mill from Lamar and renamed it Sayers & Company Mill after himself and his brother-in-law James Sayers (a planter). Lafitte's widow Pascale founded an orphanage in Thibodaux in 1853 to provide care for poor children from New Orleans who had been orphaned during the American Civil War. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson ordered troops to leave Thibodaux due to political unrest there; however, they burned down some of Lafitte's buildings before departing. The post office atuthodioux opened on November 15, 1849 under auspices of Postmaster General John Cushing Jackson with nine hundred mail horses brought overland from Mobile Bayou via I-10; however only two dozen mail bags were delivered each year until 1861 when a new rail line was built that connected Baton Rouge with Thibodaux via Stroudsburg Road and Washington Avenue east of downtown (the old Châteauguay Road). On December 2nd, 1861 Lumber Trustee Wm Higginson reopened Post Office #1 after its closure by Govt Order No: XXVI/1861 due to lack of mail transportation weekly between Baton Rouge and Thibodeau limits (now Interstate 10) while still being open 24/7... A storeroom off Railroad Ave back then served as our trunks room today! In 1886 US Senator James Kenedy commissioned local architect Samuel Nicholson to design an ornamentation style amphitheatre within sight of City Hall which would seat 1,500 people including 400 Soldiers' Chapel members serving their 25 days notice period prior to parole or release... Kenedy also requested that all jail cells be fireproofed so prisoners could not escape should hostilities resume outside since very few jails had iron bars at that time... However no such fire proofing project ever took place as Confederate forces raided Union prison camps several times throughout 1862 resulting in many dead/injured inside&outside these facilities... In 1814, General Andrew Jackson visited Thibodaux and gave the town its first name: "Thibodaux". In 1840, James K. Polk visited Thibodaux and pronounced it as "Tobadoux". In 1861–1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee fought his last battle at Alcorn Station in what is now Thibodaux before he retreated to Richmond effective January 9th 1862. On July 14th 1861 General Lafayette Condon issued orders for Captain John Jarreau's company of cavalry to cross the river at Bayou Teche and attack Union soldiers on the other side of Frenchman Lake while all other Companies were ordered to cross over with artillery support under Colonel John Witherspoon (1st Battalion) on horseback and march upriver to Baton Rouge where they would be joined by Lieutenant Colonel George Murchison's Company A (4th Regiment) later that day; but this order never reached Captain Jarreau who was delayed by bad weather on getting across the river In 1881 Lafitte Manufacturing Company founded an electric lighting plant in Thibodaux. The plant operated until 1966 when it was taken over by local power company TCI Corporation which then merged into ConEdison Corporation in 2001.
