National Guard gift history in Slidell, Louisiana began on November 12, 1898 when the Louisiana National Guard was organized. The organization was spearheaded by then-Governor of Louisiana John B. Moseley and consisted of 7 companies of soldiers from the state. The first national guard unit to be mobilized in Slidell was Company C, which arrived on November 14th. By December 2nd, all seven companies had been activated and were quartered at the Hammond Lighthouse Annex. The first national guard unit to fight in World War I was Company C from New Orleans. On October 15th 1915 they were ordered to participate in an attack on Villa Rica Lake near Thibodaux that failed due to lack of supplies and reinforcements. That same year also saw the mobilization for World War II but no units arrived until May 1942 when Company D arrived from St Bernard Parish. Throughout the war there were a variety of different missions assigned to each company including guarding military installations, airports, oil refineries and other important sites; however it is Company C that is most remembered for their service during World War I. After the end of World War I there were a number of changes taking place within the Louisiana National Guard as well aswithintheUnited States government itself with manpower being diverted towards wars fought abroad while veterans returned home or served “in absentia” (absent without leave). The regiment returned east and fought in the Mexican-American War before disbanding again in 1853. In 1859, Company E of the 1st Regiment Louisiana Infantry was reactivated and re-organized as a battery with four guns. It trained at Camp Claiborne outside Slidell for two years before being assigned to garrison duty at Pointe Coupee on Lake Pontchartrain. There it remained until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded the state and Battery E quickly moved into action supporting General Isaac Neely's Army of East Baton Rouge. After routing Union forces at Battle of Holly Springs on July 6, 1861, Battery E retreated back to Slidell where it remained until 1865 when it disbanded again due to lack of funds. In 1870, another battery (the 2nd Battalion Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry) was formed at Alexandria and assigned to duty along Red River near Thibodaux. This battery also served briefly during Reconstruction period but ultimately didn't remain active after its initial deployment ended; instead it became part of Regular Arkansas National Guard which continued operations into modern day
Slidell is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in the Louisiana Purchase region of America. The population was 1,825 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Arnaud (LAS) Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1811 by French traders as Pointe Coupon on an island near present-day Slidell when Baton Rouge and Shreveport were still part of France. In 1821, it became a post office with its own ZIP code after being moved from Pointe Coupon to what is now Slidell. The community's name comes from "slidell" or "sluice" because there was a large body of water between it and the mainland. A general store opened in 1824 and soon thereafter, slidell began to grow as a result of its location, accessibility by boat, and natural resources such as timber and fishponds. A steamboat wharf was erected at nearby Pass Christian around 1840 for shipping products from Slidell to New Orleans and points beyond. By 1850, Slidell had become one of the most important commercial settlements in Lafitte Parish. During World War II, Slidell served as an ammunition dump for Lousiana National Guard units training along the Louisiana coast south of Baton Rouge during Operation Neptune's Spear; many slidesliders lost their lives during this time including Cpls./Lt.(jg.) James Sledge and Pvt.(a.) Slidell, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is the parish seat of Slidell. The first settlers in what is now Slidell were French colonists who arrived in 1711. The name “Slidell” was given to them by Captain Jacques Slocum, leader of the whaling expedition that discovered and named New Orleans in 1699. The early residents of Slidell were farmers and fishermen who grew corn, beans, fruit trees and palm oilbeans. In 1814, Confederate General Robert Ewell during the American Civil War attacked Union General John Crain's army at Battle of Gettysburg near Slidell. Colonel James Longstreet led Union forces which successfully defended against overwhelming Confederate resistance until long after dark. After the war ended and Reconstruction began in America following the end of slavery, many Confederates returned to Louisiana but Slidell remained under Union control until 1861 when it became part of Confederate Mississippi Territory under Commandant John Buford’s command. During World War II much effort went into developing manufacturing plants for munitions production within Jefferson Parish due to its strategic location on both sides of Mobile Bay as well as its natural resources such as crude oil refineries and naval yards essential for armored combat ships build during the war. As a result of this activity many businesses including Weibull Rubber & Manufacturing Co., Ladd-Peebles Motorsports Inc., Matson Navigation Company and others sprang up around town including Percy’s Antique Mall (now known as Midtown Plaza), which retains its original architecture from before World War II; Dockery’s hardware store; White Sands Faire (now known as Legends Casino); Stonington Pharmacy; First National Bank Building; Masonic Lodge #2; Bellefontaine Cemetery etc.). Sugar cane plantations were also established here beginning with Planters' Reserve plantation started by Jean Lafitte about 1820 which yielded an annual crop amounting to over one million pounds sterling or $10 million today equivalent to over $200 million worth of sugar cane exports from Slidell between 1860-1920 processed according to current Canadian/American patterns - making it one of America's leading sugar producing areas prior to Prohibition).
