Slidell was once a small town in Louisiana. It was founded by French immigrants in the 1800s and until the late 1800s it consisted of just a few homes and businesses. The area now known as Slidell was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s. In 1821, when Louisiana became a United States territory, Slidell became its capital. By 1848, however, Slidell had shrunk to just over 100 residents because of military operations conducted there during the Mexican-American War. However, after that war, Slidell began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to boat traffic. By 1890, Slidell had become one of the most prosperous cities in Louisiana with a population of 2500. When World War I started, Slidell was one of the largest American ports serving troops fighting in Europe. Slidell is one of the oldest towns in Louisiana and was founded by French colonists in 1718 on land that now includes much of Slidell as well as parts of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The name "Slidell" comes from an early French name for the bluff where it sits on the Gulf coast: La Slida (slides). The first permanent English settlers arrived in what is now Slidell during the 18th century, seeking to trade with Native Americans who lived along the Gulf Coast. By 1811, many of these traders had moved to New Orleans, leaving behind their trading posts at La Hache and Pascagoula Bayou near present-day Slidell and Baton Rouge. In 1814, Captain James Cook discovered new land to the west which became known as Florida after his voyage around Africa. Many Englishmen decided to move westward into this newly discovered country, including some who went under the name of De Soto. At first they hunted game such as deer and bear but soon began developing fruit trees and plantations which produced cotton and other crops; consequently, they were able to send money back home to England while living off their discoveries. In 1821 Governor John Caddo appointed Colonel James Wilkinson as Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs with jurisdiction over all Creek Indians east of Mobile Bayou; this area extended from what is now Oklahoma City southward into Texas until about 1870 when it was ceded to Mexico by General Antonio López de Santa Anna following his successful campaign against American expansionism throughout most Mexico In 1840 Wilkinson organized a militia company called "The First Company", later known as "The LSU Regiment". After making several trips upriver for supplies he returned downstream at Galveston Island on August 15, 1840 with news that Spain had sold Texas beginning January 1st that year - thus completing Mexican independence from Spanish rule! This event made Mississippi mysogynistic towards Texans because Mississippi claimed all but three (west bank) pieces of Louisiana following Spanish annexation in 1800 - an act termed a "balkanization" or breakup by many historians due largely to Anglo competition for American Empire control over southeastern North America during this era
