Slidell was founded in 1871 by General John C. Breckenridge as a small trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly and by 1907, Slidell had a population of over 1,000. In 1916, Slidell became an independent municipality and in 1928 it amalgamated with neighboring St. Bernard Parish to form the current parish of Slidell. The first military unit to be stationed in Slidell was the Louisiana Infantry Regiment, which arrived in 1872. The regiment was disbanded in 1875 but reactivated again in 1886 as part of the Louisiana National Guard system. In 1902, the regiment was redesignated as Company A, 5th Battalion Louisiana Infantry Regiment and finally reorganized into battalion on July 1, 1912 as Company G (5th Battalion) Louisiana Infantry Regiment. In 1914, when World War I began, residents of Slidell mobilized to support their country. The company that would serve most prominently during the war was Company F (2nd Battalion), 15th Infantry Regiment which arrived at Slade Field on October 10th 1914 from Greer County According to historian Dickerson "the mobilization effort...was unofficially sponsored by Mayor Troup and other civic leaders who saw an opportunity for economic development through wartime production."

The primary purpose of the U.S.Army Garrison Command is to provide support for activities within the City of Slidell as well as serve as a nexus between our military and civilian communities across Louisiana and Mississippi counties. It also provides leadership opportunities for young civilians who may want to join or be drafted into the armed forces or wish to learn more about service through its programs and events such as cadet summer camps and officer candidate school tours). In addition to providing logistical support for units stationed within Louisiana and Mississippi counties, AGC also conducts major events annually such as Bastille Day celebrations in Monroe County or Veterans Day parades throughout East Baton Rouge Parish each year. These events help promote patriotism among citizens of our region while showcasing Army equipment and capabilities that can be used by anyone from everyday citizens all the way up to Generals/MDs attending these ceremonies!
Slidell, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 8,746 at the 2010 census. Slidell is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and its neighbor, Bayou d'Iberville, forms part of the boundary between Jefferson Parish and Rapides Parish. The first inhabitants of Slidell were Native Americans who lived along the riverbanks. In 1805 French traders arrived in what is now Slidell and began trading with Indian nations. By 1830, most of Slidell had been founded by white settlers from New Orleans who were looking for land to develop as they grew rich from shipping goods downriver. By 1840 most of present-day Slidell had been incorporated as a village under the name "Slidell". In 1849 Bigelow Brothers built a steamboat terminal on Bayou d'Iberville which became one of the earliest commercial ports on the Mississippi River. It remained an important commercial center until it was destroyed by a storm in 1886. For many years Slidell was part of Jackson County, Mississippi before it was annexed into Rapides Parish in 1907. The population growth rate during this time made Slider's incorporation into Rapides necessary; however annexation did not increase economic development or protect its historic architecture which has since been preserved by numerous efforts including those undertaken by local residents and professionals such as Bob Coverdell who restored much of downtown (now called "The Square") back to its pre-Civil War appearance in 2003-2004 while at work on his master's degree at Tulane University having grown up just east of town next to Bayou d'Iberville where he worked summers as a dock hand when he was young

It is the largest parish in Louisiana and second-largest in area after Orleans Parish. The parish seat is Slidell. The first inhabitants of Slidell were Native Americans who lived near the current site of Slidell on Lake Pontchartrain. A post office called "Slidell" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1853, William Pritchard built a sawmill on the river below present-day Slidell. By 1871, all of present-day Slidell had been established as a town. In 1892, Jules Broussard donated land to build a school across from his plantation south of Baton Rouge. The first school building was completed in 1896 and named for him and his wife Mathilde Courié (1847-1911). Mrs. Broussard served as Principal until 1902 when she became County Superintendent during Reconstruction following the American Civil War and returned to teaching thereafter until her death six years later at age 89 years old The post office name for Slidell changed from "Pritchardville" to "Slidell" on February 17, 1907 due to its proximity to New Orleans In 1912 slidello annexed Grosse Pointe Isle parishes which means that there are now more than one parish with this name within Jefferson Parish . In 1915 President Woodrow Wilson made public remarks locating Fort Sumter outside of New Orleans while speaking before an audience at Tulane University giving rise to rumors that he may have been considering relocation plans for Confederate General Robert E Lee’s army HQ should anything happen during WWI
