Ruston is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ruston is home to the Ruston Renaissance Fair and has been a cultural center for the area since the late 18th century. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ruston were French colonists in 1785. A post office called ruston was established in 1802, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. A mill village grew up around the mill complex on the Mad River, which began production in 1828 and continued until 1902. In 1886, J. P. Morgan bought most of the land comprising present-day Ruston from Pierre Laclede de Warengues. In 1901, Jules Garlic organized a group of farmers who named themselves "The Farmers' Alliance" and lobbied for passage of a state oil law that would allow them to drill for oil on their property near Alexandria, Louisiana; this led to Garlic's career as an oilman and major player in American business history. In 1907 Lafayette businessman César Chávez donated land east of Interstate 10 for a new high school; when it opened in 1909 it became one of America's earliest public schools with single-sex enrollment (the first such school west of the Mississippi River). That same yearruston's first grocery store opened; it became known as "The Shop" because its founders had no money other than what they could earn selling groceries door-to-doorffor their customers who helped support their family by doing chores around home (a similar system still prevails today).
