Opelousas (or Orleans) is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, on the southern banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 117,754 at the 2010 census and is the ninth-largest city in Louisiana. Opelousas became an incorporated town on May 15, 1868, when it was adjacent to present-day Monroe. The first white person to live in what is now Opelousas was Captain John Smith who landed there with his ship "Natchez" on October 16, 1795. He named it after his home town of Orléans in France. The first post office in what is now Opelousas opened in 1814 and changed its name to Orleans on December 12 that year. The area that includes today's Opelousas was settled by Native American groups beginning about two hundred years ago according to some sources; others say as early as 1500 BC European traders had visited this area and built houses hereabouts. By 1812 more than seventy boats had sailed upriver from New Orleans for Saint Domingue during Jean Lafitte's slave trade operations; these traders brought back many slaves who were then distributed among various plantation owners along the riverbanks near where Opelousa now stands - one such owner being General James Wilkinson himself! Bordering present day Lafayette Parish to the east and north were plantations known as La Belle Ile (the Beautiful Isle), meaning "Island of Many Lakes." From here numerous steamboats took passengers upriver to New Orleans each week during much of antebellum times while also carrying goods downriver which made this area one of great commercial importance; note too that no bridge ever crossed at this point! In 1815 General Wilkinson leased a tract of land south of Rapides Parish extending downriver from Baton Rouge making him become proprietor thereof alias padre de la Rivière or Father River! It wasn't until 1830 when General Wilkinson sold all his interests therein includingOpelousa Landing/Odessa Landing downstream from present day downtown for $2,500!! Today we can still see evidence that he did so including deep channeling around their landing site! This demonstrates just how important river transportation must have been at this time!! After heavy rains February 11 – 12th 1840 several homes washed away & highly valued artifacts lost forever including cannons found within those waters In 1861 a tornado destroyed most or all buildings within five miles (8 km) radius killing 36 people & injuring over 400 plus cattle & machinery located nearby In 1865 a severe flood destroyed most or all business property within 8 miles (13 km) radius but fortunately no lives were lost In 1886 both mills closed due lack of customers In 1889 another severe flood destroyed most or more importantly house & vehicles within 5 miles (8 km) radius However again no lives were lost However several valuable items such as cannons were lost permanently In 1895 two smallpox epidemics killed dozens mostly children living near rapids parish pumpkin patch however again no loss occurred

Opelousas was a small town in the parish of Orleans, Louisiana, United States at the time of its incorporation as a city on November 3, 1871. It had a population of 1,500 and was named for Peter Opelousas, an early settler. The first post office in Opelousas was established in 1856. The terms "opelousas" and "Orleans" are thought to be derived from the Algonquian word meaning "borderland." The town's name may have been inspired by General James Wilkinson's victory at Orleans Parish Bridge over Red River during the American Civil War. Opelousas experienced its heyday during Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War. In 1865 it became one of five cities in Louisiana that were designated as capital cities by Governor Edwin Edwards under order of President Andrew Johnson. The other four were New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Monroe. In 1872 Opelousas merged with neighboring La Salle to form what is now La Salle-Opelousas City Lakefront Waterfront District (LSOWD). With its large body of water frontage along both banks of Lake Pontchartrain north of downtown La Salle and east side within walking distance of most neighborhoods., LSOWD quickly became one of the most popular waterfront destinations in Louisiana. The growth around LSO WD led to an increase in traffic on I-10 through downtown La Salle; vehicular travel expanded into new neighborhoods adjacent to downtown; and commercial development sprang up along various waterwayside corridors including Canal Street between State Street and Interstate 10/US 90W which would become known as "the streetcar corridor." LSAWD also enjoyed support from local government officials who saw it as an opportunity to develop land near the lakefront for use primarily for housing but also included potential industrial or commercial ventures such as a fertilizer plant operated by J.P Thibodeau & Sons beginning in 1916 which would serve as inspiration for nearby Metairie’s similarly planned fertilizer plant operating since 1916 which achieved national notoriety due to several fires that destroyed more than 3000 homes
