Minden, Louisiana is a town in Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,846 at the 2010 census. Minden is home to the LSU Tigers football team and the Minden Lions baseball team. Minden also has a small shopping center and several churches. The town was founded in 1892 by German immigrants Jacob and Martha Schoenfeldt as a Lutheran settlement on the east bank of the Mississippi River opposite Baton Rouge. It became an independent municipality in 1904. The Schoenfeldt family were among the first Germans to settle in Louisiana after World War I when they came from Württemberg, Germany aboard SS "Oberon" from Hamburg, Germany. They purchased land near present-day Minden for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). In 1892, Jacob Schoenfeldt organized what would become known as "The First German Settlement Company," which bought 10 acres (4 ha) of land on Bellefontaine Road across from modern day LSU campus; he named it Minden after his home city of München, Bavaria. The company transported goods by steamboat upriver to its landing point at what is now Monroe Street on the east bank of the river opposite Baton Rouge where passengers disembarked and took wagons or carts to their homes before continuing upstream along Bellefontaine Road to purchase more land around present-day Minden’s current site on Plessy Avenue near Stateline Boulevard (). In 1905, following passage of Act No. 775 by then-Governor John Bel Edwards which granted municipalities self-government within their respective parishes with no higher power than that of their respective parishioners (),Minden's citizens applied for and received incorporation as an independent municipality under the name of "Minden Township." On September 12th 1906 by virtue of this incorporation act,,Minden became part of Baton Rouge Parish with all its residents subject to both parish government and taxation only as residents thereof rather than simply township residents subject only to parish government taxation (). On November 15th 1906,,the cornerstone for what would become today's replica courthouse was laid during a dedication ceremony attended by Mayor Jules D'Ennery (later governor), Sheriff James Epps Jr., First Lady Evaline Childress Hageman ( later Mrs. George Vinson ), Drs Lafayette Fournier & William McCoy (), Judge Jens Wallenstein (), Asa Hutchinson (), Edwin Franklin Phelps () and Treasurer Amedeo Zanini (). On July 16th 1907,,the first post office opened in MindEN with mail delivered daily between New Orleans and Baton Rouge via horse drawn carriage (). That same year,,,,Jacob Schoenfeldt died suddenly leaving behind three children: Martha(1887-1972), Johann(1889-1963)and Emma(1891-1971)). Three years later,,,,Emma married Julius Kappeler who had been born in MindEN two years earlier while still living there with his parents having arrived there from Weimar am Rheinbeck prior thereto . Julius Kappeler resided in mindEN until his death circa 1951 . Aramis Lachance Sr., who had come overland from St Joseph County MO some time earlier located what is now Old Hammond Road just south of current day Reynoldsburg road adjacent to US 150 about one mile west northwest of modern day Mokena road , situated about four miles due northwest (3 km) southeast (2 km)of old Hammond Rd between US 441/Old Hammond Rd & FM 968/Reynoldsburg Rd formed partaking thereby gradually assembling unto himself sundry parcels heretofore unconnected ;
The United States Air Force was founded on December 7, 1947 by President Harry S. Truman with the goal of providing a strategic airlift for the country. The USAF became operational on October 1, 1951 and saw its first combat action in Korea War. By the end of the Korean War, however, USAF had ceased to be an all-weather strategic bomber force and had become a support arm for ground forces. In June 1967, USAF hosted the 6th Summit Conference on Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I). At this conference, President Lyndon B. Johnson committed America to reduce its nuclear arsenal by 50% by 2020 and 40% by 2025. In response to America’s new commitment to arms limitation negotiations, North Vietnam announced it would begin allowing limited flights over South Vietnam without prior warning its communist enemies in order to improve relations between both sides. As a result of these events, American thermonuclear bombers were sent into orbit in order to target North Vietnamese facilities whiledisable their ability to launch missiles at American soil. This event is commonly referred to as Operation Rolling Thunder because it lasted for three months and caused extensive damage throughout North Vietnam
On December 11, 1946, the Air Force awarded General Curtis LeMay with the first of its famed "LeMay gift" awards- a citation for his contributions to airpower. The award named after General LeMay was given in recognition of his accomplishments as Commander in Chief of the United States Strategic Air Forces in World War II and later as Director of Plans and Programs at Headquarters USAF.
Minden is a small town located in the parish of Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The community was established in 1868 by settlers who arrived from Illinois. It has a population of about 3,000 people as of the 2010 census. Minden is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Minden began as a Methodist village on the banks of the Assumption River. A post office was established there in 1868, and by 1880 it had become a town. The name honored Reverend John Minden, one of its founders. The first school opened in 1875 and was taught by Mrs. Elizabeth Hinson (1824-1914). In 1903, Minden became an incorporated city with a population of about 20 people; it lost its status in 1968 when it merged with nearby Baton Rouge to form Baton Rouge/New Orleans metro area. The original Minden cotton gin ran until 1912 and still stands today at 5th Street and Broadway Avenue near downtown Baton Rouge; it produced over 7 million pounds (3 million metric tons) of cotton during its heyday. After being closed for several years due to vandalism, it reopened in 1978 as an educational attraction open to the public free of charge.
Minden was founded by the De La Vente family in 1815. The first courthouse and jail were built in Minden. In 1832, a post office was established in Minden. In 1865, the town became a parish under the name of St. Johns Parish. On July 1, 1886, Minden became an independent city and was known as "The Big City." The population of Minden grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching over 100,000 by 1910. By 1920, Minden had become a major port on the Mississippi River with shipyards and other businesses lining its streets. The Great Depression hit Minden hard and within a few years it had fallen to its lowest ebb; however, it bounced back in the late 1930s and 1940s to become one of Louisiana's most successful cities again.
