Mandeville is a small town in the St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,391 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1810 by James Monroe and named for Sir John Mandeville of England. In 1824, it became the seat of government for the new Orleans parish following its cession from East Baton Rouge Parish. The Mandeville area has been inhabited by numerous Native American groups for over 10,000 years. French colonists arrived in what is now Louisiana in 1699 and began developing sugar plantations around this area. The first white man to reside in what is now Mandeville was Captain Jean Baptiste Le Moyne who landed on an island in Lake Pontchartrain on October 5, 1718 with his three hundred troops under General Pierre-Nicolas Trémouchelle. French colonists were forced to leave their holdings after a series of Indian War battles that ended with the Treaty of 1803 which assigned all land east of the Mississippi River to America without compensation to France's original settlers. In 1810, James Monroe and his brother Marquis de Lafayette purchased 1/2 acre (0.20 km2) of land near present-day Mandeville from Antoine Lafitte for $100 payable within seven years or face forfeiture of their purchase price plus interest at 10%. In New Orleans Claiborne had already built a courthouse and judge’s house on Canal Street so Monroe moved his offices there as well as taking up residence in one room of the old City Hall building until he could build a more permanent home elsewhere on Stravaile Street where he resided until his death on July 25, 1825 at age 74 years 3 months 2 days after being inaugurated as President pro tempore of the Louisiana State Senate upon Jefferson Davis' election as Vice President effective November 3rd preceding his inauguration; Monroe envisioned himself not only as governor but also as "the preserver and defender"of Louisiana's interests since Lower Louisiana had become part of Mexico during America's war with Spain while Upper Louisiana remained part of France; So when Congress created Orleans parish – including Lower and UpperLouisiana – Monroes saw great potential for development here especially given that banks were opening up throughout New Orleans due largely to American investment dollars chasing rich Spanish soil; Monroe died before any real development occurred however - making Lafitte considerably richer than ever before while displacing many American investors - although some did set up shop downriver near modern day Baton Rouge.; Although much later development such as Interstate 20 followed adjacent Lacombe Road into downtown Mandeville property thereby facilitating increased traffic through this rural community., There are several tourist attractions located within walking distance including: Historic homes built during pre-Civil Rights era like known "Old Town" (1795), Belle Époque mansions (19th century), neo-Gothic churches like Second Amusement Park (1900), Madame Lafitte’s palace complete with interior gardens dating back to 1800 AD (now open daily 9am-5pm), largest restaurant west Of Memphis Tennessee called PETA “Pit Bullfish Eatery” opened its doors circa 1965 having been originally built by two brothers named Lamar Hunt who cooked seafood nightly at their family home becoming somethingof an amusement park featuring water slides,, A movie theater complex completed in 1990 called Madison Square Garden features 12 screens showing both feature films AND live sporting events,,,, And lastly one can visit Mystery Mansion located off US 11 south just past FM 727 giving visitors access only via hidden door leading inside

In 1803, the area that is now Mandeville was part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. The land in and around Mandeville were mostly swampy and marshy, so French explorer Pierre-Jean de La Salle named it for Nicholas-Jacques Mandeville, a French general who had fought in India. Mandeville quickly grew to be a major Creole (or African American) settlement. In 1819, the U.S. acquired what is now Baton Rouge from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. As part of this deal, Baton Rouge became America's first black city. Mandeville's early years were difficult; many slaves were brought over to work on plantations here until 1865 when emancipation happened across the United States. However, by 1830 Mandeville had become one of the most prosperous Creole communities in America due to its strategic location at a crossroads flanked by two important rivers: the Vermilion and Mississippi Rivers made it an ideal place to trade goods with both Europe and Africa. Despite these challenges, however, life gradually improved for everyone who lived in Mandeville during this time period - despite occasional shortages of food or water due to flooding or construction projects undertaken by local businesses owners – thanks largely to a combination of imported goods and hard work on behalf of residents themselves.
