In Radcliff, Kentucky, the United States Air Force has a rich history that dates back to World War II. The service’s activation and growth during this time have left an indelible mark on the community. Today, the USAF operates over 30 military installations in Kentucky, including two in Radcliff. These facilities provide much-needed training and support to local airfields and units of the National Guard. Additionally, the USAF manufactures and provides munitions for both ground forces and bombers across America. The first hint of USAF activity in Radcliff came in 1942 when General George Cushman ordered construction of an airfield at nearby Owensboro as a staging area for Operation Torch. By 1944, Owensboro had become operational as RAF Lakenheath; however, it would not be until 1947 that RAF Radcliffe was assigned to RAF Lakenheath with responsibility for all flying operations from east England to Scotland. In 1951, RAF Lakenheath became part of the newly created United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE). A few years ago, the USAF started awarding Air Force Awards for excellence in a variety of areas, including aerospace engineering and technology. This program was designed to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the USAF through their work in the field of airpower. The awards are given in various categories, and can be awarded either as a plaque or an award certificate. One of the most prestigious Air Force Awards is the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). This award is bestowed upon an individual who has achieved exceptional heroism while flying in support of military operations. The DFC is also presented by President George H.W. Bush on behalf of the USAF when he visits a unit that has been recipients of this prestigious award. The medal may also be awarded as a gift to an individual member of the USAF family or squadron during special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries.
The Radcliff Air Force Base (AAF) is home to the Kentucky Army National Guard's 232d Airlift Wing, which provides airlift support for both the U.S. Department of Defense and state and local governments in the area. Radcliff, Kentucky is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Radcliff is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on December 5, 1821 by John Wilkinson and his wife Catharine Baird. The town was named for Reverend Elijah Parish Radcliff (1785-1861), a Methodist minister who served as Bishop of Kentucky from 1828 to 1861. The first store in Radcliff opened on Main Street on December 5, 1821. A post office was established in Radcliff on November 15, 1827; it continued operation until it closed in 1865. In 1830, the village had a schoolhouse and six stores. By 1840, there were twelve stores and one bank in the community. In 1847, Rev. James Fenton purchased land near present day Radcliffe Road and erected a log cabin called Cabin No 1 on what is now that property. He also built a small church which he dedicated to the Holy Cross Catholic Church which he had completed when he died two years later at age 48 years old from tuberculosis contracted while preaching outside of Lexington during an epidemic of that disease then sweeping through the area at that time known as "the Great Misdemeanor". Cabin No 2 became home to Mrs Fenton's family after her husband's death in 1850; she continued to live there until her death in 1916 aged 92 years old having lost all but one leg below the knee due to polio caused by a fall from her horse while she was grazing nearby). Another early resident of this section of town was Mrs Hargrave who operated an inn/grill combination hotel/grocery store on High Street between 1870 - 1880 before moving permanently to Hermitage Springs eastward along US 21 after meeting Capt Rufus Bigham there during their stay at Hermitage Springs following their river rafting trip downriver from Paducah upriver some twenty miles northwesterly into what is now radcliffe KY In 1907 E J White started operating White Drugs Store located just off Elm Street next door to St Josephs Catholic School run by Father Wm Pressburg with classes starting in 1905 inside Mr White's building near today's intersection of Elm & Main Streets
The United States Air Force was founded on December 15, 1947 as the United States Air Force Reserve. The USAF is a branch of the U.S. government and it began operations with only 16 airplanes. In 1953, the USAF accepted its first operational squadron, the 9th Fighter Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. With this acceptance, the USAF entered into what would be known as its Golden Age of Aviation and saw rapid growth in both numbers and capabilities. From 1954 to 1957, the USAF acquired 1,500 planes and by 1961 had reached 2 million active military personnel in all branches of service within the USAF! In 1990 – just over 50 years after its inception – the USAF attained an additional 5 million members! It is during this time that airforce gift history truly began! In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation authorizing development of a massive new bomber force called Project Apollo which would comprise more than 100 Boeing 747s (later changed to Dirigibles) built at 7 different sites across America. The Dirigible program was soon placed headlong into trouble due to budgetary limitations and political opposition from Congresswoman Barbara Boxer (D-CA). Despite strong public support for Apollo project throughout most of 1968 – including from then Vice President Hubert Humphrey – Boxer successfully appropriated $5 billion less than planned for Apollo program funding which resulted in disaster for both NASA and Boeing! After months of negotiations between NASA Administrator James Hansen and then Senate Majority Leader Harry Byrd (D-VA) resulting in an unprecedented 3rd party agreement providing enough money to keep all components alive but also avoid cancellation altogether – Phase I/II became a reality on July 20th 1969 when two Boeing 747s carrying Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became first humans ever to walk on Mars! Upon landing on Mars they were met by Commandant Richard Nixon who presented them with their respective achievement badges! Today we celebrate not only these accomplishments but also 55 years of continuous service by our men and women in uniform…and we can thank our friends at The Boeing Company for helping make it all happen!

Radcliff, Kentucky is located in the state of Kentucky and lies within the Ballard County Limit. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Radcliff was founded by Nicholas Clinch in 1833 and became a town in 1884. It is named after General James H. Radcliffe who fought against Mexico during the Mexican War. Radcliff had a post office from 1834 to 1865 and a school from 1865 to 1903. The first store in Radcliff was built by John Aiken in 1835 and he operated it until his death in 1861. In 1903, the first high school in town opened and it served as the only public school until 2003 when Highlands High School opened nearby. The first shop on Main Street opened in 1860 and it continued to be operated until 1978 when it closed for good due to financial difficulties. In 1984, an amusement park called Six Flags Great Americaopened near Radcliff which served as a major economic driver for the town until its closure in 1997. In 2002, Hurricane Andrew devastated much of central Florida which led to a significant decline in visitation to Radcliff; however, tourism has been increasing since its return to full capacity following Hurricane Irma earlier this year The early history of Radcliff can be traced back to Nicholas Clinch who settled thereabouts around 1833 after traveling through what is now Ballard County looking for land that he could purchase with money earned fighting against Mexico during their war for independence from Spain (1810-1821). He soon realized that he would not find such great land while living closeby so he started looking further afield but eventually decided on what are now known as Radcliffe Township, KENTUCKY which lay along THE WILDERNESS RIVER west of present day Ballard City limits then just east of KY Route 64 today’s Louisville Metro area south side of I-65 about 12 miles northwest of downtown Louisville on Pedrick Road just west of Old Hickory Lake On July 7th 1830Nicholas Clinch laid out one hundred acres “at or near where our present home stands” just eastof present day US 41 & Mechanic Lane between Lookout Mountain Light House Rd./Lenox Hill Rd.–still extant–and Laurel Hill Rd., & Surveyor's Notch Lp., still extant withinBallard Co., Ky.–on clay Bankside bluff overlooking open water [now part of Laurel Hill Cemetery] on bank opposite shore [now bottom] Tidal action made various improvements possible including draining ditch completed Septemb[er 10th 1840]; road later named by him…. – From A History Of radcliffe KY By MrsMaryJClinch
Radcliff was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and his brother-in-law, Major John Smith. The town was named for the cliffs that dominate the area. Radcliff developed as a post office and general store. In 1830, the first school was built in Radcliff. In 1834, the first courthouse was built in Radcliff. In 1840, radcliffe became a city and served as its capital from 1840 to 1846. In 1865, it merged with Louisville to form the Louisville and Nashville Railroad system.
