This led to extensive development in Newport but also to increased competition from nearby cities such as Cincinnati and Louisville. By 1860, Newport had become an agricultural society with several cotton plantations and a small population density. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865) it came under military occupation by Confederate forces until Union troops regained control in 1865. After the war ended, many residents moved away from Newport because of new technologies such as electricity and automobiles that had come about since the war began. In 1969/1970, however, many reconstruction projects began in downtown Newport which led to renewed interest in the city among civilians and businesses alike; today it is one of its most vibrant neighborhoods
