Madisonville is a small town in Pulaski County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first settler in Madisonville was James Caldwell, who bought land here from Lord Botetourt in 1811. By 1824, the Caldwell family had built a gristmill on what is now Main Street. They also operated a ferry across the river to provide transportation for goods and people between Jackson and Lexington. In 1827, John Witherspoon established a school here for children of farmers and loggers living around Jackson and Lexington. In 1828, Witherspoon's students organized into two schools – one for white children and one for colored students – which remain separate to this day. The first post office opened in Madisonville on October 3, 1830. The community grew rapidly with many Greek-named families moving into the area during the 1830s: Koumounas (Konstantinos), Dandots (Dionysios), Papadakis (Paschalos), Giannakis (Iannisidis), etcetera. In 1840–41,ialbum painting by Ansel Adams was made available to view at the University of Kentucky by Professor Samuel Eliot Morison following his visit to Madisonville that year while working as an instructor there under Morison's guidance in art history! During World War II much of downtown Madisonville was destroyed by fire due to bombing raids over pulaski county; however most of it has since been rebuilt including new businesses such as McDonald's and KFC; new housing developments have also sprung up around town including apartments overlooking downtown; and many national historic sites have been located within easy walking or biking distance ofMadisonville making it an activity destination richly deserving its appellation "The Unofficial Capital Of America".
