The racial makeup of the town was 97% White alone, 0% African American, 0% Native American, 0% Asian, <0% Pacific Islander,, and 2% from two or more races. Madisonville is a small town in Kentucky, located on the banks of the Ohio River. The community was founded in 1810 by revolutionary War veteran, James Madison. The name refers to the nearby Mount Vernon estate, which was then the wealthiest man in America. The town quickly became a stop on stagecoach trail from Lexington and Louisville to Cincinnati and other parts of Kentucky. In 1827, it also became home to one of the first cotton plantations in Kentucky. The following year, Madisonville became the site of one of America's first congressional districts. The town continued to grow as an agricultural center during the 19th century. By 1930, it had reached its peak population with over 10,000 residents. However, economic decline and population growth has since caused much decline and loss of cultural heritage within Madisonville. Today, only a few remaining buildings remain from when Madisonville was one of America's most vibrant towns.
The first white settlers in Madisonville were James and Nancy Caldwell who arrived in 1785. The Caldwells were the first to build a cabin on the banks of the Ohio River. In 1802, John Witherspoon, a Scottish-born lawyer and landowner, purchased some of Witherspoon's holdings in what is now Madisonville from Witherspoon's father. Witherspoon named his new settlement after James Caldwell, one of his investors. By 1810, most of the town had been built and it was part of Fayette County. In 1830, Fayette County was divided into two districts – Clay and Jefferson – which madeMadisonville part of Clay District. The population rapidly grew during this time as more people came to live in rural areas near the river. In 1840, when Clay District was divided again into three parts – Perry and Campbell districts – Madisonville became part of Perry District. In 1850, when Perry District was again divided into four parts – Hardin, Todd, Jasper and Lawrence districts – Madisonville became part of Hardin District. In 1861, when Hardin District was reorganized asJefferson County, Madisonville remained within Jefferson County but its status changed from town to village because there were only a few hundred residents living in it at that time. In 1903–1904, when Jefferson County was renamed Montgomery County, Madisonville seceded from Montgomery County and became an independent city under the name ofMadisonville. The population reached 1001 by 1907 but decreased to 811 by 1920 due to World War I refugees who moved into the city after Lexington closed its cotton mills for World War I production interruption; however they soon returned home once Lexington reopened its mills again. During World War II many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany because they believed that America should be “the moral leader” among nations; however no military action occurred in or aroundMadisonville during that period
