Hopkinsville is a town in and the county seat of Knox County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown, OH-KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Hopkinsville was John Pemberton in 1819. He founded the village of Pemberton on the site of what is now downtown Hopkinsville. By 1840, Hopkinsville had a population of 1,500 people. In 1845, General Wm Hays moved his headquarters to Hopkinsville from Washington County and named it after himself. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 had 4square miles (10 km2) of land area. In 1876, President James K. Polk sent Representative John Atherton to Knox County to promote agricultural development in central Kentucky as part of his plan for creating new states out of old ones during the US Civil War effort. Atherton's mission was successful; he persuaded Governor David Boren to create Knox County from parts of Hardin and Jefferson counties and give it its current name – Hopkinsville County – because there were few other towns within that size with similar demographics or interests for development. The city began rapid growth due to manufacturing during World War II; thousands of soldiers who served in Europe came back home and started their own families in Hopkinsville over that period – giving birth to what has come to be known as "the baby boom." The war created an opportunity for businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Bethlehem Steel Corporation to set up plants here; these companies brought many workers into Hopkinsville during those years, helping make it one of the most diverse cities in America at that time.
