Hopkinsville is a small, rural town in Fayette County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hopkinsville Post Office opened on April 17, 1859, and closed in 1920. The town was named for General George Washington Hopkins (1756-1834), an American general who led military campaigns against British forces during the French and Indian War and during the Mexican-American War. A post office called Hopkinton was established in 1853, and closed in 1865. A post office called Hopkinsville Heights was established in 1907, but closed in 1914. The first store built in Hopkinsville was a mercantile business operated by Elisha Bickerton and his brother Isaac Bickerton until it burned down on November 3, 1868. The first school inside of Hopkinsville was built on Academy Road near present day Middlebrook Drive shopping center on October 12th of that year by Mrs Anna Bevan with help from her husband John Bevan Sr.. In 1871 Mr & Mrs J H Bowen started teaching school for six months each month to fill up what would be left of the old school following the end of their honeymoon trip to Europe.. By 1880 there were 10 schools open with enrollment ranging from 1 to 30 children per room./ On October 20th US Grant’s 3rd inauguration took place at Constitution Hall where he received his oath as President before 507 Governors including James Kenedy who administered oaths also taking part were present including Genl Andrew Johnson who had been inaugurated only two days earlier as Vice President under Abraham Lincoln

The community was founded by John Hopkins in 1825 as a stop on his journey from Louisville to Lexington. It grew rapidly during the 1800s and reached its peak of development around 1830 when it had a population of 2,000 people. However, by 1850, Hopkinsville's growth had slowed and it only had a population of 500 people. The decline in population can be traced to factors such as increased travel times and competition from larger towns along the railroad. Additionally, many businesses closed during the American Civil War because there were no war-related opportunities in Hopkinsville. In 1865, most of the residents left for good after an outbreak of measles killed many of their children. However,Hopkinsville has bounced back since then and currently has a population of 1,554 people (2010). Many local businesses still operate including two banks (the First National Bank and Trust Company and Capital Bankshares) as well as several restaurants and bars which have helped keep the community vibrant over the years. Oneof HopkinsVILLE's main attractions is its annual Christmas treelighting event which takes place on December 15th each year at 6 p.m.. Hopkinsville has also been home to several professional sports teams over the years including both basketball (the Hopkinsville Colonels) and football (the Hickson Wildcats). These teams have often brought excitement to town although they have never won any championships!
