Hopkinsville is a small town in Kentucky, located near the Ohio River. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town started as a small village on the banks of the river in what is now Hopkinsville. A post office was established there in 1829, and by 1836 it had grown to include a school and store. In 1850, the community had already grown sufficiently that it incorporated as a government township with a measure of self-government. In 1859, when Kentucky became an Confederate state, Hopkinsville joined neighboring Georgetown into one county under martial law; this arrangement lasted until 1865 when Lexington took over governance of that portion of Kentucky east of the river. After Kentucky seceded from the United States in 1861, Hopkinsville remained within Union territory but lost its municipal rights and corporate status until 1870 when they were restored by an act of Congress following General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. The first mill in Hopkinsville was built about 1840 by John Smeaton and operated until 1862; after thatdate it was used mainly for flour production. A second mill was built about 1860 by Elijah Capps and continued to be in use until 1886; afterward it became known as "the old salt" mills because much salt was processed here prior to being exported to Europe (primarily England). The three mills produced some 175 million pounds (70 million kg) of flour each during their heyday – more than any other American mill between 1830 and 18901 – although competition from imported rivals led to closure of many Hopkinsville mills between 1885 and 19152. The last mill closed down completely in 19163 due to lack of market demand for flour after World War I4; today only ruins remain from those days: an open-air brick kiln dating back to 1793 remains standing next to Main Street while another 1793 structure has been preserved as Engine & Axle Shop #3 on Old Market Square5

Hopkinsville is a small town in Hopkins County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Hopkins County. The first permanent settler in Hopkinsville was James Waddell in 1814. In 1821, John Sowell settled here and started to grow corn. In 1830, he built the first post office in Hopkinsville. In 1832, Daniel Boone moved his family to this area from Danforth Township, Maryland due to the lack of water resources there. He named his new settlement after General David Harcourt (1755-1827), who had been a major figure during the American Revolution and had helped lead Kentucky into statehood as part of Virginia. In 1860, when Kentuckians voted on whether to secede from the Union, majorities of both men and women living in Hopkinsville voted against secession because they felt that their rights as citizens of Kentucky were being violated by Southern efforts to keep them under control. Nevertheless, some people within the community began planning for secession anyway and on April 12th 1861 a group of about thirty-five men gathered around a large bonfire near the courthouse square and declared themselves "The Confederate State of Kentucky." They made plans for arms storage and other preparations until news arrived that Lincoln had issued an executive order ordering all Ulysses S.
