Erlanger is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Erlanger were three men from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1792 and named it after their home town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1811, John Myrick built the first permanent home in what is now Erlanger. He and his wife, Sarah Goode Myrick, raised six children there: three boys and four girls. The Myricks also operated a farm until they sold it to Harry Ferguson in 1854. John Auld was another early settler in this area and he founded Auldsville on the site of today's town hall (now known as Old Fort Couch). He built a log cabin there on November 15, 1820. In 1824 he married Margaret Richardson and moved to this location with her. They raised eight children here: five boys and three girls. In 1830 John Forbes purchased land near present-day Erlanger from James Caldwell for $600 cash plus 10% interest each year until it became available again. Here he established himself as a farmer with his family and began growing corn, cattle, hay, oats, potatoes and other crops which he transported by wagon to marketplaces in nearby Lexington and Frankfort for sale or export. In 1840 Forbes built an addition to his farm that still stands today – the only example remaining of its type west of the Allegheny Mountains! This house was used as a jail during the Civil War because Andersonville prison was located just outside town limits at that time! In 1850 David Ewing organized local farmers into two groups to purchase 6 acres (2 hectares) of low lying ground east of present-day Erlanger for future development into farmland; this area would become known as Murray Hill.. With help from Samuel Morse he laid out streets through Murray Hill before erecting buildings on them which included a schoolhouse (1850), store (1851), mill (1852), post office (1853), courthouse (1859) – all still standing today! A new church was erected on lot #4 adjacent to present day First Baptist Church when that church became operational in 1865;this building still stands Today! The community's rapid growth led to several name changes during its early years including: Enoch Park Village (1856-57),Erlane(1858),Cedarvale( 1860-61),Merrillville( 1862) – but no one really knew why such variations occurred! finally when situated on property donated by General Graly McNairy following his victory over Union forces at Perryville on December 16th ‘65 things got straightened out’and nickname given once more…..Erlangerville……….which means "little village"Today! Despite some challenges faced throughout its history such as initial poverty due largely to lack of farming equipment & transportation facilities later replaced by modern technology; nevertheless Erlangerville has grown considerably since becoming an unincorporated community within Hardin County…………………..And we can only hope that it will continue to do so for many years yet
