Berea, Kentucky is a small town located in the Louisville metropolitan area. The population was 8,548 at the 2010 census. The town is made up of two villages: Berea and Overton. Berea Village had a population of 1,992 in 2000 and 2,043 in 2010. Overton Village had a population of 2,521 in 2000 and 2,846 in 2010. The first mention of Berea was as an Indian village on the east bank of the Big Creek near where it flows into the Ohio River. It was probably founded by members of the Shawnee nation around 1800 when they were seeking refuge from white settlers who were encroaching on their land. The Cherokee people also settled in this area at some point after Removal from Georgia. After Kentucky became a state in 1801, General David Lane built his military fort here to protect against Indians attacks on horseback during frontier warfare between United States forces and Native American groups such as the Shawnee and Potawatomi nations. In 1830 Samuel Ballard erected a log courthouse which served as court house until it burned down in 1851. In 1835 James Alexander founded the first store here with his brother-in-law John Fenton and opened it for business on Main Street near where today's First Baptist Church stands (built 1860). A post office called Berea was established here in 1837 but closed operations two years later because of lack of customers. A Methodist church was built here by 1840 but failed to gain much popularity among local residents so it was torn down soon afterward. In1857 Isaac Newton bought land adjacent to Main Street for $2 per acre which he used to build what is now known as Blakemore House (now part of Trinity Academy). This new home served as both Newton's residence and farm headquarters during his lifetime; he also donated all or parts of many other homes within Berea village throughout his life including Overton Village which still stands today unchanged except for its large green lawns which are now used for parking lots by local businesses). In 1870 John Ritchie erected a sawmill on Green Fork Falls about northeast of town center; this mill continued operation until 1907 when it went out OF BUSINESS due to changing economic conditions nationwide; however, one remaining piece from that time remains standing just northwest of town limits next to Interstate 65 Truck Stop: Ritchie Mill Dam! In 1909 over 50% Of Allocation For School Buildings In Kentucky Was Given To Localities Which Were Located Inside Of Ten Miles Of Urban Centers! In 1924 Jethro Tilton organized "The Berean Band" here locally playing music halls across central Kentucky until their disbanding around 1935 due to financial problems Connected To World War II shortages Of lumber & other resources led By Tilton himself! Today nearly all activity within Berea takes place outside its boundaries thanks mostly To Vestavia Hills University With Their Agricultural Research Center Downtown And An Hospital/Shopping mall Just Outside Town Limits Named "Baylor University"!!!

Berea, Kentucky is a small town located in McCracken County, Kentucky. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Berea were James and Catria (Crawford) Beaumont who founded the town in 1811. In 1815, Berea was laid out as a town by order of General Andrew Jackson. The original plat for Berea was on what is now First Street between Harrison and Third Streets. It had a population of about seventy-five people. On February 23, 1816, the first post office in Berea opened with three pieces of mail from Louisville to Breckinridge County. At that time there were only two steamboats plying the Ohio River and it took weeks for news to get throughaddle boats In 1827, Reverend John Sweeny started an academy which became one of the leading schools in Berea. Reverend Sweeny also built a parish church which still stands today on Main Street near Fourth Street. In 1830-31, Colonel John Withers came to Berea and set up a store and then began building houses which are still standing today on Second Street east of Main Street In 1840-41 when Kentucky became part of the United States we experienced some very tough times with many families making the difficult decision to migrate westward to escape poverty and violence back East….The migration process was made much more difficult by changes taking place within our society during this time such as women being given voting rights (1850), advancements in transportation (railroads came into play after 1850), advances in agricultural technology (the Internal Improvement Act offered tax breaks/grants to farmers), etc…..Many men simply could not stomach living under martial law while their wives faced social discrimination…..So many families decided instead to move westward where they would find ample opportunity for economic advancement even if their homes did not stay put….After several years of hard work moving forward with little success farming land where there had been none before they finally found success at mining coal near Lexington……..This area became known as “The Coal Field” because so much coal was produced here it caused production quotas created by neighbors upstream ensuring no one got too rich without contributing anything back…..By 1865 all but two buildings remaining from when Berea was founded were gone or had been destroyed by fire however over 1,000 people lived here including 300+ school children who attended local academies until 1861 when Union troops burned down all those buildings leaving nothing but rubble once again……………………………………… By 1870 most residents had either moved away or left for other parts of Kentucky due to lack of opportunities or conflicts across state lines
