Bardstown, Kentucky is home to one of the oldest police departments in the United States. The city was founded in 1821 and has been a law enforcement center ever since. Bardstown is a small town located in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is the home of Transylvania University and the headquarters of the Kentucky Colonels baseball team. The town's earliest reference to a settlement called Bardstown can be found in an account by John Kennedy as he traveled through Jefferson County during his campaign for president in 1960. He noted that there were "a few families living on the banks of the river" and that "the whole place seemed very quiet." The first permanent settler in Bardstown was George Witherspoon, who arrived around 1785. By 1800, there were more than 100 people living in Bardstown. In 1814, Kentucky became a state and new legislation was passed giving land to individual citizens within Jefferson County for Agricultural or Civil Work purposes. One such person was Drury Gentry (1784-1850), who purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land northwest of the present-day town of Bardstown from James Whitehead for $1 per acre ($30 per kilometer). Gentry named his new tract “Bardstown” after his old home in England where he had been born three years previous. At first only male farmers could own land here; but over time many women also began to purchase parcels of land hereabouts. In 1831, Gentry sold additional property eastward from his original holdings to form what is now known as Easton Park Cemetery which still houses graves from that early period.* It wasn't until March 5th, 1868 when General William Taney pronounced sentence against five men for treason for refusing to stand trial for their beliefs about slavery which resulted in nine deaths before they were eventually pardoned by President Andrew Johnson* That opened up opportunities for Kentuckians to start buying and selling real estate hereabouts*. Many went on to become famous figures throughout history; including Judge David Belknap (1816-1911), Mayor James Kenedy (1861-1937), Governor Ulysses S. Grant (1839-1920), Senator Benjamin Fenton Keynes (1906-1976) and Congressman membro Robert Crayton (R–KY*) all natives of this area.* In 1865 local resident Isaac Meek started baking bread at home with some flour brought overland from Illinois* His recipe soon caught on with others and Bakewell’s Bread Company – founded by Obadiah Brown – was established nearby just north of downtown Bardstown in 1875.* The company has since closed but its logo still remains behind one street corner near downtown where customers can still buy their favoriteProducts!*Besides Baking Bread Company locals also operated several taverns such as Parson John’s Tavern*, Landing Tavern*, Stroudsburg Inn*, Western Metropole Hotel & Opera House(* later Presque Isle Hotel*) among many others!* *All businesses listed are open today except Partisan Wharf which closed down circa 1990

Bardstown was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith. The community became a stop on the Underground Railroad and during the American Revolution it played an important role as a center of resistance. In 1801, Bardstown was chartered as a town by Kentucky General Assembly. In 1827, the first courthouse in Bardstown was built and in 1830, the first school opened in the community. In 1837, Bardstown became one of two towns in Kentucky to be incorporated as a city. On July 1, 1861, Bardstown became one of fifteen Confederate States of America cities located within Tennessee. On January 15, 1865, Bardstown was captured by Union forces and renamed Richmond Heights after Confederate General Robert Ewell Jackson's headquarters.
Bardstown, Kentucky is a city in and the county seat of Clark County. It is located on the Cumberland River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Louisville, the state's largest city. The population was 107,546 at the 2010 census. Bardstown has been named one of America's "25 Most Intensely Diverse Cities" by Forbes magazine in 2016. In 2017, it was announced that Bardstown had been chosen as one of the world's ten most liveable cities by The Economist Intelligence Unit. The town began as a post office in 1813 and became a borough in 1838. It became an incorporated town in 1902 and a city with its own charter in 1907. On October 16, 1881, during the American Civil War, three Confederate soldiers were killed while patrolling near present-day downtown Bardstown when their guide horse stumbled and they fell off; this event is known as "The Three Musketeers Incident." On February 14th 1865 Colonel George Rogers Clark’s cavalry brigade passed through Bardstown en route to cross over into Kentucky from Tennessee during what is now called “the Raid on Paducah”; this raid helped consolidate Union control over central Kentucky after Confederate General Robert E. Lee turned his army around and retreated back into Virginia following Pickett’s Charge across the Potomac River at First Manassas Junction on July 12th 1863. One Confederate soldier remains buried at Green Gap Cemetery which lies just east of downtown Bardstown proper: Private First Class Thomas J Henson who died on July 9th 1863 aged 23 years old during Robert E., Union Major General James Longstreet’s ill-fated first major offensive against Confederate forces north of Richmond…. Today Green Gap Cemetery contains Panel G (Panel A), Row M (Rows G-H), Tombstones Nos 4 & 5…. WhenGeneral James Longstreet ordered his attack upon Petersburg on April 15th 1865 he knew that there would be no return to civilian life until after dark; accordingly he ordered all Federal Soldiers burial complete within 24 hours…..Today many people believe that Green Gap Cemetery may have been responsible for saving more lives then any other place…..A marker to Private First Class Thomas J Henson can be found facing away from Green Gap Cemetery towards Lexington Avenue…. Also located adjacent to Greengap Cemetery is another unmarked grave containing 5 small human bones from what appears to be an early 20th century family… today only 1 small piece of bone remains from this individual…. Located just southwest of downtown Bardstown Proper off US 41 are two large military facilities known collectively as Fort Knox and Camp Douglas – both were constructed during World War II as part of Project Paperclip which aimed to bring Nazi Germany's experts into American society…… Today Fort Knox houses approximately 2200 United States Military veterans & their families while Camp Douglas functions primarily as a training ground for Army Reserve Officers… most importantly both these locations remain symbols of America's pastime: war!
