Leavenworth is a city in Cowley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,392 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cowley County. Leavenworth is part of the Topeka–Council Bluffs, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Armstrong Custer and his family in 1854 as an agricultural community on the edge of what would later become Leavenworth County. A post office was established there in 1857 and named for General Lafayette Leavenworth, who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War. The first store in town opened its doors on December 12, 1860. In 1867, a railroad station was built along the Santa Fe Railway line and became known as "Leavenworth". The town rapidly grew due to its location and easy access to rail transportation; by 1880 it had a population of 10,000 residents. By 1900 local boosters had built over 100 businesses and boasted a school system that included nine schools (all public), two hospitals (both with private treatment facilities), six churches (one Congregationalist/ Evangelical Protestant and five Baptist/ Methodist), three grain elevators, four hotels/ boardinghouses, twenty-six stores including twelve drugstores/ grocery stores/, sixteen blacksmiths/, eight wagonmakers/, four harnessmakers/, one insurance agent/. In 1907 Leavenworth hosted America's Cup races off Long Island Sound; this event helped establish it as an international trade center for agriculture goods destined for Europe and Asia. The townsfolk banded together to build a new public building dubbed "The White House" which served as their municipal hall until 1939; it has been renovated several times since then but still remains standing today within walking distance of mostofthetownspeople. When World War II began in 1939 all nonessential industries were closed down except for one small farming operation - wheat sheaths - which continued production until 1943 when government troops liberated the town from Japanese occupation while still under military control following Japan's surrender declaration that year; however, no attempt has been made to reopen these mills since then! Leavenworth was founded by Mormons in 1851 as a stop on their journey from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City. After Mormon missionaries died in Utah during the wagon train disaster of 1848, settlers began to arrive in Leavenworth and other nearby towns seeking religiousfreedom under the Missouri Compromise of 1850. The Mormons ceded control of their settlement to the federal government in 1858 and all but two of its residents left for good by 1860 when Kansas became a state. The city's current growth can be traced back to its role as the site for Buffalo Soldier National Military Park from 1907 until it closed in 1950 due to budget cuts caused by World War II.
