The original downtown district that stretched along Baltimore Avenue between First Street and Second Street was built mainly by settlers who came from eastern Kentucky or southern Tennessee looking for land to farm or build homes. By 1881 only 10% remained standing due to factors such as development around Interstate 35 and poor soil quality caused by excessive building materials brought over from Europe via wagon trains during what were known as 'the Great Western Gold Rush.'
