Derby, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,485 at the 2010 census. Derby was founded in 1873 by James W. Derby and his brother-in-law David M. Smith. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first courthouse in Derby was built in 1875 and became the county seat of Sedgwick County that year. In 1907, Derby was renamed to honor Admiral Adm. Chester Fenton Pinchot who had been governor of Colorado from 1909 to 1913 and president of the United States from 1913 to 1921. The town's current name came about when citizens voted on a proposal to change its name to "Derby" after they heard that another town in Missouri with the same name had gone through some Significant Changes (including being made an incorporated city). In 1905, a large oil well was drilled near what is now downtown Derby and several companies leased land for drilling operations; however, no production ever took place because lack of access to resources proved difficult to overcome during this early years of oil industry development in Sedgwick County. However, many people were hopeful that new technology would make these wells pay off as this area lay within striking distance of Wichita Falls which then held world-renowned petroleum reserves available for exploration; however, little happened until 1914 when Edwin O'Keefe borrowed money from Jock Mahony and drilled the first commercial well at milepost 10 on Ranch Road 6 north of downtown Derby - becoming one of the largest independent oil producers in Kansas at that time! In 1916 Drilling & Production Company acquired all interest in Drilling & Production Company Limited Partnership which drills for crude oil throughout America including those rights located within contract areas allotted by statute under acts passed by Congress authorizing such leasing activities; since this company bore primary responsibility for developing both floors (the main floor) above ground with surface water supplies as necessary thereto – making it one among many such interests existing within this limited partnership background providing drillers with continued access beneath ground whereupon ultimate production could be realized without any additional investment or beyond initial costs incurred – it has come about as an ironic outcome than much later on when other interests are brought into play having nothing whatsoever to do with producing API crude oil but rather become parasitic participants sucking resources away from their original partner thereby diminishing their own value proposition!
