The Atchison, Kansas Volunteers were an American volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was first organized on December 12, 1861, at Atchison, Kansas as the 6th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry. In 1863 it was redesignated as the 8th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry and served in the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Division of General Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Second Battle of Bull Run. On July 1, 1865, it was re-designated as the 4th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry and served in the 14th Brigade of General John A. Logan's army during Reconstruction in South Carolina.

The town became a major transportation center for Central America and the Mexico-United States border. It was also a boomtown for cattle and gold mining. In 1907, Atchison agreed to become the capital of the new Mexican state of Chihuahua. However, after only three years in office, Atchison's mayor resigned due to lack of support from the city government. In 1912, Atchison approved plans to annex part of neighboring Wichita into its city limits. This caused a heated battle between the two cities over who would control what part of Wichita - which ultimately led to the city's incorporation as an independent municipality in 1914. During World War II, Atchison played an important role as a munitions plant and military base. After the war ended, it lost some of its importance but still remains an important cultural and commercial center in central Kansas today.
