When Waukee residents Dick and Janice Houser bought their home in 1959, they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. They quickly became pioneers in the gun industry, starting a Gun Shop on South Main Street that continues to operate today. Through the years, Dick has been an active part of the community and has donated many firearms to various events and charities. In honor of his contributions and those made by others in the community, we are honoring Dick Houser with a plaque currently located at our local shooting range.

It was not until 1896 that Congress passed the National Firearms Act which banned all handguns except those used in legitimate gunfights and hunting purposes. This act made it much harder for civilians to buy firearms and caused the homicide rate among law-abiding citizens to increase significantly (Walsh & Snider 2009). Today we can see examples of how guns have been used throughout history by giving gifts such as pistols and revolvers to loved ones or friends who may need them most during special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. Waukee is a small town in Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Des Moines metropolitan area. Waukee is located on the Mississippi River and has a long history as an agricultural center for the state of Iowa. The first inhabitants of what is now Waukee were Native American Sioux. They built their first permanent home in 1827 near present day Cedar Rapids. In 1851, Waukee was organized as a county seat by Iowa Territorial Legislature. The post office in Waukee was opened in 1857, and the first store was built in 1861 by Elisha Holmes Sr.. The town's growth was slow due to lack of transportation and limited access to resources. In 1888, a branch railroad was constructed through Waukee making it easier for people to get around. In 1911, when Des Moines County became independent from Iowa Territory, it annexed most of northwest Cedar Rapids Township including present day Waukee. This made Waukee an official city with its own police department and court system which continued until 1947 when those functions were transferred to downtown Des Moines. Starting in 1907, local farmers began using manure as fertilizers instead of straw for their crops which helped increase crop yields; this led to increased business opportunities for businesses such as A&P grocery stores and Kwik Marts that would open up throughout the early 20th century within walking distance of each other across Ames Boulevard east of Western Avenue (now Main Street). In 1951, four-time winner Floyd Bostrom donated $100,000 towards construction of Ralston College's new football stadium which would replace Cyclone Stadium on University Drive in Des Moines; this donation allowed Waukee's city government to build its first municipal building on Central Park Road just south of US Highway 6 near Interstate 35E (now I-235). With increased prosperity came social unrest during the 1960s due to changes brought about by technology such as television commercials since there were no public wide 7-Elevens or convenience stores at that time like there are today; however, this did not stop people from wanting quality family entertainment options close by like movie theaters or bowling alley cafés like Dairy Queen next door on North Walnut Street where they could enjoy fresh air while watching movies or playing games without having to leave their homes
