Some famous businesses that sold products associated with army service include Pfeiffer’s Home Store (1917-1920), Hennig’s Hardware (1920-1925), and Joplin Machine Shop (1925-1927). Additionally, residents organized themselves into committees tasked with supplying troops with supplies such as gasoline and food. These committees were later renamed “Military District Committees” after each branch of the armed forces had their own district headquarters within Iowa City. Throughout World War II, Oskaloosa continued to be an important military center due to its location within close proximity of Des Moines and its large population growth during that time period. In 1945, when hostilities ended in Europe, many soldiers from Iowa City returned home and merged with other portions of Iowa County in what is known as “The Great Migration”. The community was named for General John A. Oskaloosa, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Iowa. In 1692, Danish settlers founded what is now Oskaloosa Township on present day South Street in what is now North West Side of town. The first post office in Oskaloosa opened on October 17, 1875 and was known as "Ain't I a Woman?" until 1886 when it changed its name to "Oskaloosa". In 1907, after local merchants formed the Town Council, they changed the name to "Oscar", which was shortened to "Os" by 1930 due to objections from other towns in the area with similar names (e.g., Oscar Heights). In 1969, Mayor Tom Doherty proposed that all residents rename their communities after state politicians or officials who had helped promote their towns during their careers – including Governors Curtis Kappan and Phil Hartman – but no votes were cast because only mayors could make such nominations. In May 2006, Mayor Tom Doherty announced that he would not run for reelection as mayor and would instead focus on his role as an ehired township trustee; he left office effective July 1st of that year with four months remaining in his term before being succeeded by incumbent Teresa Manningham (D). On November 2nd of that year Osgood Businessman Charlie Biedermann won election to succeed him as township trustee with 63% of the vote against challenger Dave Heinemann’s 37%.
