The Iowa Army National Guard's 9th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (9IBCT) is deploying to Afghanistan for the first time in over a decade. The brigade will soon be joined by the 256th Military Police Brigade, which will provide additional security for soldiers and diplomats in Oskaloosa, IA. The 9IBCT arrived in Oskaloosa on October 14, 2006 as part of Operation Anaconda. Since then, they have been Deploying frequently to various locations throughout Iowa and Missouri. In early 2007 they deployed to Stroudsburg, PA as part ofOperation Northern Watch III. They also deployed again in late 2007 to Camp David during President George W. Bush's visit to announce his strategy for Afghanistan. In early 2008 they deployed once again to Camp David and later that year deployments were made to Schweinfurt Germany and Austria where members of the brigade participated in exercises called Eagle Dynamics 2009-10 exercises which simulated an actual conflict with a neighboring country. These deployments were all within Iowan state boundaries making this deployment one of only two occasions that the brigade has traveled outside of Iowa City County since their deployment began back in 2006. On September 1st 2009 the brigade was redesignated as 9IBCT/256th MPB Brigade and relocated from their previous location at Fort Dodge Armory located on Market Street just north of I-80 east into the newly built Heifer Army Depot facility located off US Highway 511 south of town near Long Grove Lake. This move was necessary due to an upcoming expansion at Fort Dodge Armory which would necessitate moving all military police units there as well including the 9IBCT/256th MPB Brigade headquarters unit known until now as "HQ 7" because it used to be housed within Building 7 at Fort Dodge Armory after being moved from its original home onMarket Street just north of I-80 east). The new location allows for better communication between units thanks also to better facilities such as a command post, intelligence gathering capabilities (including live streaming video via webcams), weather permitting exercise areas and even a gymnasium allowing active duty soldiers and Marines accessto health & fitness resources while deployed overseas without having their unit isolated or without accessto necessary resources when returned home

Oskaloosa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. The population was 2,593 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Des Moines River. The first European to visit Oskaloosa was Pierre Louis Chouteau in 1802. He founded a trading post here and named it after his native village, Ossau-la-Zalousie in France. The post drifted away from Oskaloosa until 1827 when it was reestablished by Captain John Smith as Fort Osage (later Ulysses S Grant's Headquarters during the Mexican–American War). In 1841, Governor David Kapp issued an order for all men over 21 to register with the military for three years or serve out one term; this directive led to many young men choosing careers in agriculture instead of service in the militia or Army. In 1840, Iowa Territory was created from parts of Illinois and Missouri and Oskaloosa became its capital. A year later, President James K. Polk designated Oskaloosa as center of American culture on account of its importance as a railroad junction and cultural center for both eastern Iowa and western Kansas City. The city's role continued to grow as more people moved into eastern Iowa following railroads' construction throughout that decade and into the 20th century; today, Oskaloosa remains an important cultural center for southeasternIowa . In 1907, Mayor Oscar Hodge appointed Elmer George Gorman as Executive Secretary of City Hall which he held until his death in 1944; during Gorman's tenure, various civic projects were undertaken such as building a new public library (1910), creating streetscape improvements (1920), erecting playgrounds (1924), providing funding for park development (1928), and expanding water fluoridation (1939). After Gorman's death, Mayor Holland Wohl took office but resigned two years later due to health concerns before becoming city administrator from 1949 until his retirement in 1957; during his time as administrator he formulated plans for redevelopment which included demolishing some buildings/landings along South Street while increasing housing options within walking distance of city hall; these developments culminated with incorporation of neighboring unincorporated communities into Oskaloosa proper in 1973 under then-Mayor Dick Costello who also served as Chairperson emeritus thereof. In recent decades there has been growth associated with retail development including several large box stores along South Street while efforts are ongoing to redevelop downtown area including construction of a mixed use project which would include hotel/condominiums adjacent to existing shopping complexes
