After World War II ended there was much speculation about what would happen to all of these installations once peace returned to Europe. The Dubuque Commercial Historic District is a national historic district that includes over 100 buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Dubuque has been inhabited for about 350 years and first appeared on maps in 1836. The original settlers were French Canadians who came to this area as part of the Great Lakes commercial fur trade. In 1854, American pioneers arrived from Illinois and built a log cabin near present-day Dubuque. They named their new town after General James J. Dubois, leader of Ulysses S. The city began to grow rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major trails that connected Chicago with Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and Des Moines with Des Moines proper (then called "Davenport").
