Dubuque is a town in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dubuque County. The first permanent settler in what is now Dubuque was James Hutton in 1836. settlers began arriving in large numbers beginning in the late 1840s and early 1850s. By 1860, there were over 100 farmers living in Dubuque Township. The first school was built on land donated by David Dunning on October 12, 1854. In 1865, a post office called "Dubenee" was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1875. During the American Civil War (1861-1865),Dubuque served as a garrison for Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant until November 8th when it fell to Confederate forces under Jephson Greenough following a three-day Siege of the town with little resistance from the citizens. On July 4th 1865, Jubal Early's army invaded Iowa City and burned much of downtown before retreating back into Georgia on July 7th after suffering heavy casualties near Birney’s Mill which destroyed Early’s supply line reaching Mobile Alabama; due to this damage Dubuque lost its main source of income for many years thereafter. True to form however, upon learning about Early’s retreat early that morning local men set out processions around town singing “Jubal Early Will Not Be Defeated!” This event soon became known as “The Battle of Independence Day". A few weeks later on August 2nd 1865 Jubal Early again attacked Independence but this time with much more success resulting in loss of life and destruction including several churches and homes along with most importantly all his supplies depot inside Independence Hall itself which completely disrupted bustling city life forevermore Known as “The siege of Independence day” even today locals celebrate August 2nd each year asNational Celebration Day to show their appreciation for all that happened during that fateful day
