The history of the Iowa Army National Guard began in 1855 when a group of military veterans from Dubuque, Iowa formed an organization to help maintain order and protect the state. The first unit was organized into a regiment and served in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the Iowa State Guard was created as part of the Department of Defense. The guard prefix was dropped in 1922, when it became part of the Iowa National Guard. In 1959, allIowa National Guardsmen were redesignated as Regular Army troops and kept their titles until 1992 when they were re-designated as the Iowa Army National Guard. Today, over 140,000 soldiers from across Iowa serve within our military forces. These men and women are responsible for keeping our community safe and ensuring that we can respond to any situation that might arise. Dubuque, Iowa is a city in Iowa that was founded in 1847. It is the county seat of Dubuque County and part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The population was 521,609 at the 2010 census. The Dubuque Manufacturing Co., one of the largest employers in town, was founded in 1892. In 1907, Dubuque became an urban center when it annexed its neighbor to the east, Wilton Park. The city's growth began with its location on the Mississippi River and its access to water resources. In 1846, Captain John Crouse and his men were exploring what would become Iowa when they discovered a salt lick on the banks of the river. They named their new settlement after General James K. Polk because he had been president during World War II and helped create American military power in Europe. The first residents of Dubuque were farmers who grew corn, wheat, barley, oats and potatoes for local markets as well as trading goods with other villages along the Mississippi River Valley. By 1840,Dubuque had a sewage plant and public baths which attracted people from nearby towns such as Waterloo and Burlington (now Des Moines). The first proper school established in this community was called First Presbyterian School but changed its name to Unity School in 1861 after merging with other schools within town limits. In 1867-68, a group of businessmen from Cedar Rapids decided to build a flour mill on Black Hawk Creek near present day downtown Dubuque due to high demand for Spec’t No 9 flour from eastern cities such as Chicago and New York City (the market at that time being controlled by East Indian Mills). This mill produced over 2 million pounds of flour each year until it closed operations in 1922 due to competition from larger mills located elsewhere on the continent.. In 1959-1960 construction began on what would become known as Conference Center Drive which served as both home shopping mall for locals and future events like NCAA Basketball games between Michigan State University (MSU) and Purdue University (Purdue), among others.. One can still see some remnants of this structure today including two large I-beams reaching skyward directly out over Interstate 380 while also remaining above ground level allowing easy observation during protests or rallies against government policies
