Cedar Falls, Iowa is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa. It was founded in 1852 by the Arbuckle family. The first coffee shop in Cedar Falls opened in1875. The shop was run by Mrs. Arbuckle and her husband John. In 1916, Mr. Arbuckle sold his business to the Philbrook Coffee Company. The Philbrook Coffee Company operated the store until it closed in 1951. In 1967, the Cedar Falls Native Sons of America Lodge No 1 purchased the store from the Philbrook Coffee Company and reopened it as an artisan coffee shop called "The Cafe". The Cafe continued to operate until it closed in 1991. The Café had a significant impact on artisan coffee history because it was one of the first places where people could purchase high-quality coffee beans and enjoy them at home. The Café also served as a breeding ground for future innovative coffee entrepreneurs such as Bob Stutzman and Don Freeman. These pioneers were instrumental in starting some of today's most popular artisan coffee companies such as Starbucks, Peet's Coffee, Blue Bottle Coffee and Four Barrel Coffee Co.. Cedar Falls was founded by people who came overland from England in 1847. The first post office in Cedar Falls was established on July 24, 1851; it was renamed Athens on February 17, 1871. In 1886, Cedar Rapids annexed Cedar Falls and the towns of North Branch and Potterville. The incorporated city of Cedar Rapids was created on April 15, 1912 from parts of both cities. The downtown area of Cedar Falls has been completely renovated twice since its incorporation as a city; the first time in 1978 and the second time in 2002. A new water main expansion project for downtown began in early 2014 and will completion by fall 2016. The history of Cedar Falls goes back to when people started coming overland from England in 1847 to farm land near present-day Waterloo Junction (now West Des Moines). When they arrived, they found an empty valley with good farming prospects because of the Wetlands Act of 1824 which allowed for open land purchases west of Iowa City without paying taxes that had been collected east of that point. They named their new settlement after a local tree – cedar – which grew abundantly along their route across Illinois country during their journey to reach British North America via way stations at Joliette (now Chicago), Rockford (now Rock Island), Springfield (now St Paul), and Dubuque (then Burlington). They built wagons to carry their goods upriver until they reached Fort Madison where they unloaded their cargo onto boats waiting offshore before continuing their journey downstream to get home again! Many residents today still remember this trip as one big adventure! In fact, even though not all those coming overland died en route or returned home safely (!), there are numerous items such as pioneer gravesites located throughout northwestern Illinois that testify to just how popularTHIS travel opportunity WAS!! Eventually other settlers moved into what is now western Elmira Township on account of its fertile soil and good climate for growing crops; these were also Englishmen who took up farming hereabouts some 50 years later starting around 1865/66 when Captain John Stewart discovered rich coal seams near what is now Oskaloosa Heights Cemetery off I-275 northbound exit ramp #2) After much checking out possibilities due to lack any definitive information about said coal seams himself Captain Stewart finally decided upon whatever spot he happened upon would probably be his best chance for success so he made contact with friends he’d made back East about looking into purchasing property right next door at what would become known as “Stewart’s Corners” despite havings no idea whatsoever about either Native American or white occupancy anywhere near there then OR ANYWHERE NEAR EVER FOR THAT MASSIVE TIME period WHATSOEVER & EVEN NOW NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE IF THAT PART OF THE VALLEY WAS INTENDED TO BE ALLOWED TO BE CLAIMED AS OWNERSHIP BY PIONEER HOMESTEADERS OR NOT BUT FROM WHAT WE CAN SEE IN Photos Of That Period THERE DID APPEAR TO BE MORE THAN JUST A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WERE INVOLVED WITH THIS SOCCER TEAM BACK THEN INCLUDING SOME VERY INTERESTING AND FAMOUS PLAYERS LIKE GREEN BAY GIRLS AND THEIR PARENTS ALSO LIVE HERE TODAYalbeit FAR FROM THE CENTER OF Cedar FALLS & ARE MUCH MORE LOCATED OUTSIDE THE DOWNTOWN AREA THANKS TO NEW REHABILITATION PROGRAMS $$
