Zionsville, Indiana is a city of 11,000 people located in the northwestern corner of the state of Indiana. The city was founded in 1847 by Levi Holland and James W. Ritchie as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The first police department was organized in 1871, and Zionsville became an incorporated town in 1912. Over time, the department has grown to include a bureau consisting of 16 officers and a detachment of motorcycles. The first European settlement in what would become Zionsville was founded in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques de Lacrosse, a French military officer and explorer who explored the area now comprising Indiana and Illinois. In 1802, John Smedley built a cabin on the banks of the Licking River which he called "Smedley's Station." Smedley had come toIndiana as an emigrant from England with his family in 1801 and he soon established himself as a landowner, trader, and farmer in this region. In 1807, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable reached Zionsville from Michigan via Erie Canal with his ship "Pioneer" and named it after him for his discovery of that year's salt lick near modern day Indianapolis (now Bloomington). Du Sable also donated land to establish what would become Zionsville Township on November 12, 1807. The township was organized into two townships – Zionsville Township (north) and Peru Township (south). The first post office for both townships was established at Lacrosse Hall on May 25, 1800; however, only Peruvian Township received mail service until 1865 when both townships were combined into one municipality under their current name. The pioneer era saw many important events take place in Zionsville including: America's first full moon eclipse taking place over Cincinnati on July 20th 1827; American Revolution victory at Yorktown Heights over British forces on September 17th 1781; establishment of railroads through central Indiana by John Stephenson in1852; construction of Brown County Courthouse beginning in 1861 which served as the county center until replaced by present day courthouse building beginning in 1903.; opening of North Central High School ((now North Central Community College))in 1926.; purchase by General Electric Company of approximately 144 acres northwest of downtown Zionsville for use as their new corporate campus starting December 1st 1922 making it one of the largest private college campuses ever constructed.; redesignation as a National Historic Landmark District/Cemetery District #5673(designated February 16th 1978)
