Zionsville, Indiana is a small town in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The Town of Zionsville was platted on December 25, 1825 by General James Wilkinson and Dr. John Witherspoon as a village to be located on the north bank of the White River within what would eventually become the city of Indianapolis. On January 1, 1829, Zionsville merged with neighboring Village of Dearborn to form a new town government with a population of over 10,000. In 1851, Zionsville became an independent city when it annexed Dearborn Heights and parts of Paintsville. On November 3rd,1871, during the American Civil War Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Fort Harrison near present-day Terre Haute. The attack resulted in more than 60 casualties on both sides and destroyed three cannons and four artillery pieces from Fort Harrison's stockade which closed off access to that portion of Indianapolis known as "the Bottom". This event helped spur development around that location including heavy industry such as brewing beer and car manufacturing starting up in those days before railroads came into play In 1922 Zionsville established itself as an agricultural center by annexation of two adjacent towns - Peru City and Shelby Township - giving it access to larger markets outside its community boundaries like Chicago and Detroit while still remaining economically autonomous In 1937-1938 construction began on what would become known as "The Pentagon" which served as America's first self-contained air defense system against Japanese bombers during World War II Postwar growth brought new businesses such as tire stores (the first in Indiana), fast food restaurants (Chili’s) and retail stores like Sears followed by professional services such as law firms until 2000 when all but one were closed down by economic conditions Today there are only five full-time employed citizens out of a total population over 10k+ with most people working either part time or semi-professional jobs in various fields along with many family members involved in agriculture or other rural activities
