The Coast Guard is a service that has been in Zionsville, Indiana since 1921. The first Coast Guardsmen were hired in 1921 and the present force of over 4,000 men and women come from all over the United States to protect our coastline. The population of Zionsville was 8,471 at the 2010 census. The first Baptist church in Zionsville was built in 1845 and is now used as a library. The second Baptist church was built in 1849 and is now used as a community center. The first Catholic church in Zionsville was built in 1850 and is now used as a schoolhouse. In 1907, the Methodist Church merged with the Catholic Church to form the current Lutheran congregation. Zionsville has a variety of businesses and organizations that contribute to its economy. One such business is the Stroudsburg School District which provides educational services to area students. Another business is Pritchard's Department Store which sells clothes, books, food, Toys for Tots, and other items for children throughout the year. Additionally, there are several agriculture businesses that provide goods and services to local residents including Two Rivers Farms which produces hay and other commodities; Pioneer Piggery which manufactures pork products; Crockett’s Lumberjacks who supply lumber for homebuilders; Wagon Wheel Ford repair shop; Phelps-Dodge Motorsports Park where drivers can race cars on open track; and White Sands Casino where players can gamble or play blackjack or slots
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the American public since 1790.Today, the Coast Guard is a major provider of security and rescue services both at home and abroad. The Coast Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to 1790 when the first U.S. Customs House was built on Governors Island in New York City. On December 14, 1814, Commodore John Cushing became the first coast guard captain when he took command of the USS Constitution during her maiden voyage from Newport News, Virginia to New York City. From then until 1861, the Coast Guard operated under direct control of President James K. Polk’s Department of Commerce and Labor. In 1917, Congress created an independent Department of Homeland Security which merged with the Coast Guard on February 1st, 2002). Zionsville was founded in 1817 by Solomon Ziegler. The town was named after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the founder of the settlement. Ziegler arrived in America in 1795 and started a mill on the current site of the village. He also constructed a gristmill and sawmill which operated until 1825. In 1824, Solomon Ziegler donated land to build a school. The first school building was built on what is now First Avenue in Zionsville. The school served students from both rural andurban areas of the village for over 60 years. In 1922, Zionsville became an incorporated municipality with its own government and library system. The first post office was opened in 1824 at Sixth Street and Second Avenue. Today, there are several businesses located within 1 mile of the old post office including a supermarket, movie theater, bank, doctor's office and convenience store. In 2002, Zionsville celebrated its 175th anniversary with a variety of events including an agricultural fairgrounds parade, fireworks display and fireworks show at Live Oak Park Cemetery
Zionsville was founded in 1824 by George and Elizabeth Zions. The first settler in the area, Elijah Jennings, arrived in 1825. A post office was established at Zionsville in 1830, and the population grew rapidly. In 1836, the Indiana General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the creation of a township within Vincennes County. On March 3, 1838, Zionsville became an organized town with a government consisting of aldermen and trustees.
