Davenport donated $5,000 to help build a Coast Guard station in Mooresville. The first commanding officer of the Coast Guard detachment was Captain William H. Price who served from 1919-1939. During this time, the detachments served various missions such as coastal security and search and rescue operations. The final donation from Mooresville came in 1954 when Mrs. Lillie Ackerstedt made a gift of $25,000 towards building new barracks for the Coast Guard station in Mooresville. Mooresville is a small, rural town in the northernmost corner of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mooresville was founded in 1836 by Welsh immigrants William and Mary Moore as a Methodist outpost on the banks of the White River. The town was named after General Andrew Johnson, who served as president during the American Civil War and later became an important figure in post-war Reconstructionism in America. The Moore family operated a lucrative cotton gin and grist mill until it closed in 1941; however, local historians note that even then Mooresville had some of "the most vibrant cultural life" in southern Indiana for many years before its decline began following World War II demographic changes that caused an increase in white flight to larger cities such as Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1951, when Interstate 65 (I-65) was built through central Indiana, Mooresville lost much of its status as a bedroom community for suburbanites living near I-465 (now Loop 805). In recent decades there has been some effort to revive downtown Mooresville with various events and businesses like art walks, music festivals, etc., but progress has been slow due to economic restraints on government funding which have kept downtown vacated for several years now Today moorevillians enjoy plenty of outdoor activities like fishing tournaments staged each fall at one of two lakes located just northwest of town center; country dancing every Sunday night at Friendship Baptist Church from 7pm to 10pm; picnics on Saturday afternoons throughout summertime at ponds or fields along village green; diverse restaurants within walking distance including several Japanese restaurants near mall exit; excellent educational opportunities available including evening classes from acclaimed colleges such as DePauw University and Purdue University
