When Indiana became a state in 1817, it was one of the most sparsely populated states in the Union. The only city in the state was Indianapolis, and its population was just over 1,000. But by 1830, Indianapolis had grown to become one of the largest cities in the United States with a population of over 10,000. The growth of Indianapolis led to a change in demographics in Marion County. In 1830, about 40% of the county’s population were Irish Catholics – more than any other ethnic group. This shift happened as a result of several factors: first, Catholicishops began offering parishes within Marion County grants of land for religious services; second, new transportation methods such as railroads made travel between Indianapolis and surrounding counties easier; and finally, Irish immigrants brought their culture with them when they arrived in waves from Ireland during the late 1800s. Despite these changes – including an increase in crime rates – Marion County continued to grow rapidly through 1840 until it reached its current size with over 100,000 residents. The growth of Indianapolis also led to an increase in business opportunities for businesses located within miles of both cities. This prosperity helped spur development along two major corridors: US-41 (the original Interstate) and State Road 509 (known today as I-64). Today, Marion is known for its rich history and cultural attractions including churches and museums dating back to pioneer times; local restaurants and bars that offer unique dishes; historical homes throughout town; beautiful parks complete with lakeside walks or golf courses; and many interesting places to explore such as Fort Wayne’s Hoosier National Monument or West Lafayette’s downtown area filled with art galleries, antique stores and shopping districts.
On December 5, 1818, Marion County was established as a county in Indiana. It was named for General George Armstrong Custer. The first courthouse was built in 1824 and it is still in use today.
