Lafayette's 1st Bombardment Wing (later known as "The Big Red One") was reactivated on February 17th 1948 under assignment to Strategic Air Command(SAC). The wing replaced elements of Sixth Bombardment Group (later known as "The Blue Devils"), which had been temporarily inactive since World War II ended. The 1 BW flew Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars from Elmendorf AFB adjacent to Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport through 1949; these were followed by two Douglas DC-3s purchased by 1 BW in 1951-. On May 3rd 1952 1 BW took delivery of its first Boeing B-47 Stratojet! "From shortly after I became director general/headquarters," wrote Lt Col Sonny Wright later commander Eighth AF Headquarters "the feeling among all my people working directly with our [Air Force] guests was one occasionist could not change." By 1953 this feeling had dissipated somewhat with Director General Wright taking charge personally numbering all staff officers under him instead of relying strictly upon Headquarters staff functionaries...I believe if any visitor wanted something special we would get it done." - Sonny Wright 9/24/53 plaque dedication
