Coffee has been enjoyed by humans for over 4000 years. Coffee beans were first roasted and ground in Africa about 4,000 years ago. The first coffee houses in the United States began to open in Boston in 1825. In the late 1800s, coffee became a popular beverage throughout Europe and America. In 1912, Dutch coffee house owner Cornelius Vanderbilt started importing coffee from Brazil. By 1915, Morehouse College had opened their own coffee house. One of the earliest espresso machines was invented by Italian engineer Giovanni Botticelli in 1795. In 1938, Turkish coffee house owner Kemal Atatürk put cafés all over Turkey into operation with the help of Frenchmen who tasted the beans while on vacation there. After World War II ended, many European countries placed restrictions on caffeine because it was thought that its addictive qualities might lead to addiction among war veterans or other people who had high levels of caffeine intake (Krueger). In Hammond, Indiana some of the earliest commercial establishments that sold café-style java were The Java House (1886), The Dutch Bros Coffee House (1893), Bob’s Café (1910), Jack & Jill’s Cafe (1927), and Harry’s Place (1938). These restaurants typically served two types of java: black and white; or two different kinds of creams: Americano and Cappuccino. Some cafes also offered iced tea and ice cream as well as pastries such as croissants and donuts which were commonly bought with chocolate milk or hot cocoa served cold (− Ellington). The popularity of espresso at these venues likely played a role in its spread to other cities across North America during this time period (+ Ellington). By 1930-1945 most US Cafes serving Espresso made use of either Nespresso Machine parts or Machines built by German company Krombacher (+ Kruse). However, some cafes continued to serve traditional iced coffees until well after World War II (- Schroeder) when they moved away from using electric machines to produce strong drinks due to safety concerns (+ Kruse). At around this time frame various lenticular printing devices became available which allowed businesses like Starbucks + Dunkin' Donuts + Peet's Coffee to create unique cups with pictures printed onto them which could be ordered online for delivery directly to your home - giving birth also to what is now known as cupcake culture (# Kluge). With technology evolving so quickly - one can only imagine how exciting things may have been if we had not lost touch with our ancestors regarding all things caffeinated!

There are many coffee stories in Hammond, Indiana. The first coffee shop was opened in 1851 by Nicholas Hahn and his brother, Johann. The shop was known as the German Coffee House. In 1865, John Tilton started a grocery store next door to the German Coffee House and began serving coffee. By 1898, the Tilton Store had moved to its present location and served coffee until it closed in 1957. In 1916, Harry Nyquist and his son-in-law Hugo Spangler opened the Nyquist Coffee Shop on west Main Street near downtown Hammond. Nyquist became well known for his hand-pulled espresso drinks and made them available at all of his shops. The Nyquist Coffee Shop remained open until it closed in 1971. In 1951, Franz Schmid founded Schmid's Cafe on State Road 1 north of town. Schmid's Cafe served Italian and coffee drinks until it closed in 1978. In 1984, Bob Garella started Serveo Coffee on east Main Street in downtown Hammond with a small capacity of about 20 cups per day. Serveo quickly grew into one of Hammond's largest cafes with over 100 cups per day served today! The business continued to grow through the years until 2002 when Serveo merged with Dutch Bros., Inc., which operated the Dutch Bros.' Market Place across from city hall before that store closed down in 2013 also citing economic reasons not related to beans or coffee quality but due to changes within the market place itself (iPad sales dominating).
Hammond is a town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. Hammond is the seat of Putnam County. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Hammond was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Hammond and his brother-in-law John Sayers as a post office on the banks of the White River. The first settler in Hammond was John Greenleaf who built a cabin on Pond Creek in 1837. In 1840, George Wray built a log cabin on what is now West Main Street. On July 12, 1841, an act of Congress authorized the organization of Putnam County and named it for General David Hamond who had been killed during the Mexican War several months earlier. In 1847, both Nicholas Hammond and John Sayers were elected to serve as members of the Indiana Senate but they resigned their seats to become farmers in Ohio which left open the seat for election in Putnam County which Nicholas Hammond won with 59% of the vote against 23% given to incumbent Harrison Grayling Jr.. In 1860, when Andrew Johnson became president of America, he ordered reconstruction efforts across America be conducted under Federal auspices known as "the Morrill Act". One such program was called "The Freedmen's Bureau" which aimed to help former slaves find new homes and start over in freedom. As part of this program, General James Hulbert orderedNicholas Hammond to begin construction on what would eventually become known as Hamilton Hall Tower inside Wheeler Library complex downtown today’s Indianola Square just east off I-65 south from where Interstate 65 intersects with State Road 3 near Hendricks Center Mall today's Eckerdalle Place east from US Highway 22 southeast from US Highway 6 west from present day I-465 north from present day US Highway 27 south from today's city limits

Hammond was founded in 1824 by John Hammond and his family. The original town site was a small creek that ran through the village of Hammond. The community quickly grew, and in 1828, Hammond became an incorporated town. In 1829, the first school was built in the town. By 1830, there were also two churches and a schoolhouse. In 1836, Hammond had a population of 350 people; by 1840, it had grown to 1,000 people. In 1840-1841, Hammond become one of three cities in Indiana chartered with a special purpose: "to promote agricultural interests." From this initial focus on agriculture, Hammond developed into an important center for manufacturing throughout much of Indiana until after World War II when its status as an industrial city declined nationally due to decreases in manufacturing jobs nationwide. John Hammond died in 1847 and his widow married George Stephenson Jr., who served as governor of Indiana from 1853 to 1861 and as secretary of state from 1861 to 1865. George Stephenson Sr.'s political career began during the early years of the American Civil War when he served as captain general of the Union army's Second Brigade under General Ulysses S. Grant (1804-1865). He then moved up through military service until he reached the rank of brigadier general at age 44; he would be elevated to major general six years later and lieutenant general five years after that before his death at age 80. During these years he played a significant role in leading both sides of the war effort while serving as commander-in-chief (1865-1869) of Union forces occupying Kentucky and Tennessee following General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865.) George Stephenson Sr.'s son George Hinton Stephenson became president pro tempore (the first African American elected to this office)of the United States Senate from Illinois from 1971-1975; he was succeeded by Bob Dole (BA 1976). After leaving government service Hamilton County Seat went back to being unincorporated but now has its own name – partaking heavily within local government since 1984. currently home is nearby Terre Haute which is still part rural hamlet with farmers
